Mobilink and UNICEF Celebrate Global Hand-washing Day 2012

Mobilink_logoMobilink and UNICEF have joined hands to launch Global Handwashing Day across Pakistan.

The initiative was launched at a local school, with participation by representatives of the Federal Ministry for Climate Change, UNICEF and Mobilink Torchbearers.

Global Handwashing Day is a broad-based initiative to spreadhand wash hygiene-awareness, educate children on the proper technique of handwashing as well as reaffirm a commitment to proper hygiene.

UNICEF is celebrating Global Handwashing Day 2012 across Pakistan by providing 250,000 children with handwashing soap as well as lessons to nearly half a million children on the benefits of handwashing. Mobilink will be sending out informational messages to its subscriber base to raise awareness. Mobilink Torchbearers will also participate in the school based activities to help spread awareness.

This initiative is particularly important in light of the devastating floods in Sindh, Punjab and Balochistan, where many thousands of children remain susceptible to water-borne diseases in areas where water has still not receded.

Mehmood Alam, Secretary, Ministry of Climate Change highlighted, “Islam teaches us that cleanliness is half of Godliness. We can build good hygiene practices and habits on the solid rock of our basic values.”

Omar Manzur, Head of Corporate Communications, Mobilink added, “Mobilink believes in nurturing healthy habits in the community as a part of our broader commitment to improve health care across Pakistan. We can make a significant difference by simply ensuring cleanliness and hygiene among the masses, with special emphasis on our children.”

Dan Rohrmann, Country Representative (Pakistan), UNICEF said, “Handwashing is an effective, low cost investment in the future life of a child. The return on this investment can be seen in the improved health and wellness of children across the country – especially those living in flood-affected areas.”

In 2012, Global Handwashing Day will also be celebrated virtually on Twitter and Facebook. The hashtag for Global Handwashing Day 2012 is #iwashmyhands. Twitter users are encouraged to Tweet this hashtag in the lead up to, and on, Global Handwashing Day to raise awareness of the importance of washing our hands with soap.
