Mobilink Joins The Race of GSMA Global Awards

Mobilink_logoMobilink has joined the race of GSMA Global Awards by getting nominated in the category of Best Mobile Education or Learning Product or Service.

The award category aims to highlight the rapidly increasing convergence of the mobile and education sectors, and to highlight some of the key areas of genuine innovation in learning and education initiatives, products, services or applications throughout the world today.

The nomination selected was made under the CSR project of Mobilink Foundation named ‘SMS Based Literacy’ program that was launched in May 2009.

The SMS Based Literacy program has been implemented in under-served areas to target semi-literate youth girls/women falling in the age bracket of 15-25 years.

Other contesting operators, in the category, besides Mobilink are:

  • Blackboard Inc for Blackboard Mobileâ„¢ Learn
  • ChangeCorp and EnableM for eLife Tablet for Teachers
  • KT Corporation for KT’s Olleh School
  • Marvell Technology Group for Marvell® SMILE Plug

Mobilink’s SMS Based Literacy The program is currently in its third phase and is being implemented in the provinces of Punjab and Khyber Pukhtunkhwa of Pakistan. The third phase is expected to be completed in by March of this year.

The program was a joint venture of Mobilink Foundation as the technical facilitator / United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as the implementation agency / Two Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), namely Dhaka Ahsania Mission Pakistan and Bunyad as project executors.

As the technical facilitator, Mobilink Foundation provided activated SIM cards / numbers for each teacher and learner to communicate. Till date, the SMS Based Literacy program has reached out to 4,000 learners who have been provided basic literacy skills by communicating with teachers through SMS based interactive lessons.

This is the first time when three Pakistani organizations have submitted their nomination and have been shortlisted. In past years, two entries from Pakistan were selected in different categories.

Previously Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) under the chairmanship of Shahzada Alam had won the Best Government Leadership Award; then UBL Omni won 1st rank slot last year for Transparent and Efficient Cash Disbursement Service after the 2009 IDPs Crisis and the 2010 Flood Crisis.
