Qatar Telecom Shows Interest for 4G License: IT Ministry

Qatar Telecom, now known as Ooredoo, has suddenly shown interest in one of the remaining 4G license that was left unsold in Spectrum Auction in Pakistan earlier this year.

More Magazine, while citing an official statement, has reported that Ooredoo – the parent group of wi-tribe – is eagerly waiting for the moment when Pakistan would announce the auction of remaining spectrum of 4G so that it could participate in the auction to strengthen its presence in Pakistan’s telecom market.

Ooredoo intents were made public when its delegation met with Anusha Rehman, Minister for IT and Telecom at MoIT office yesterday.

It won’t be out of place to mention that Anusha Rehman had herself visited Qatar to convince Ooredoo for participation in spectrum auction, however, Qatar’s incumbent operator had conveniently reject Anusha’s offer then.

Ooredoo’s Delegation was led by the CEO of Witribe, Wasim Ahmad.

Anusha Rehman, while appreciating Ooredoo’s interest, responded that government of Pakistan is indeed planning to hold the auction two unsold spectrums and license before middle of next year.

Referring to China Mobile (Zong) the minister said that 3G and 4G has immense potential in Pakistan and that can be witnessed from 1 million 3G subscriptions that Zong has acquired in first three months.

Analysts said that Ooredoo’s chance in Pakistan’s telecom market are minimal, particularly when we have four 3G operators in market already. Their interest in 4G segment should be considered as a marketing catch line only.

  • BTW, how is it possible when they don’t have cellular services can provide 4G services?

    • they have “Wi-tribe” here in Pakistan.. its a wireless internet service.. so they sure can upgrade to provide 4G dongles maybe or even wireless modems with build in batteries to carry with you.. if they get the License

    • They can provide voice services with a 4G license using VoLTE. Although it will create problems since not all phones will support VoLTE. It’d be really difficult for them to gain a decent market share.

Maybe they are just interested in the 4G spectrum to improve their WiMax services. :/

      • This is very rare and not meture enough. However witribe is better option and also non voice services would also be possible.. One more option is 850mhz spectrum for 2g and 1800 for 4g. Like warid

  • They can succeed if they provide 3G/4G at cheaper rates as compared to current operators.

  • What a shame! Instead of place Legendary Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s picture, they have managed to put Nawaz Shareef’s there!

  • maybe they are eyeing upon snatching dsl home customers from ptcl by providing cheap packages. lots of 4G operators in the world are providing cheap 4g packages for home users

    • But I think wireless subscribers get volume capped packages that is why broadband connections are always the primary mode of using internet.

      • well in saudi arabia , stc offers unlimited 4g internet upto 150Mbps for 12 months over its 4g router @ SAR 1400. which translates to 3200rs per month.

in behrain 40BD per month for 25Mbps and 250GB data and 80BD for 1000GB upto 100Mbps.

      • Wireless Equipment is cheaper as compared to wired.Quality of wireless is excellent as compared to wired. As 3G is new technology, data volume is capped. As subscriptions will grow(e,g Zong has now more than one million 3G Subscriptions), data volume capping will enhance and may cross 100GB when overall 3G/4G Subscriptions will be more than 10 million in 6 to 8 months,New products always take some time for penetration.

    • It is not possible because operating wireless equipment(tx and rx) is far more expensive than wired. Just for example, what cost is incurring to ptcl on copper line DP as compared to any wireless tower?

      • well i guess operating wireless network is not expensive compared to wired one. wired network needs lots of maintenance work compared to wireless. anyways lots of network providers in the world are already providing great 4G packages. check the home 4G packages of zain bahrain, stc and mobily saudi arabia.

      • ???

What is the cost of running ONE CABLE PER TOWER compared with the cost of running 100 cables to 100 DSL subdscribers? Which thing breaks frequently and needs lineman?

I don’t know about you but I live not far from the exchange and even in my area (no new construction, houses far apart) I see the lineman almost every day fixing faults. Did you factor in cost of operations?

      • Operational cost of Wireless(Towers etc) is low as compared to wired. So cheap 3G/4G data packages are expected from mobile companies.

  • The main beneficiary of 4G will be corporate sector so new companies and investors are showing interest in 4G for getting maximum profits.

  • ye moti saal mein do dafa nikalti hai, twitter account bnd kr daiti hai! or phir guum ho jaati hai!
