Chinese mobile phone maker Elephone has announced that it is working on a brand new flagship Android smartphone that features dual-boot capability. The phone will be available in two configurations; one with only Android 5.0 Lollipop and the other with both Windows 10 and Android 5.0 Lollipop running in dual-boot.

According to Chinese tech portal GizChina, both versions of the phone come with a 5.5 inch 2560 x 1440 LCD display. This should please Windows Phone enthusiasts, as there is currently no flagship smartphone in the market that runs on Windows OS and comes with a 2K display. At the heart of the Android-only variant beats a 64-bit Mediatek chipset, while the dual-OS version contains a quad-core Intel chipset.

Elephone’s new flagship will run Android Lollipop as well as Windows 10

Both versions will ship with 4GB of memory in addition to 32GB internal storage. However, the rear cameras in both versions will be different, with the Android-only and dual-OS versions sporting a 21MP and 20.7MP camera respectively. Both versions will reportedly come with a battery that has a capacity of more than 3,800mAh.

While demand for Android phones with dual-OS support certainly exists in the market, Google is reportedly not in favor of the idea and certainly not encouraging OEMs to go ahead with such projects. Microsoft also has reservations of its own regarding dual-boot smartphones, albeit to a lesser extent. Free from the shackles of giant corporations, this is where Chinese mobile phone manufacturers like Elephone make a rather unique business proposition.

The Android-only version of the phone will be available starting next month, while the dual-boot capable variant will launch in June.

The Android-only version of the phone will be available starting next month, while the dual-boot capable variant will launch in June. Despite the high-end specs, both models are expected to be relatively affordable, as Elephone’s pricing is known to be rather aggressive. However, their availability is likely to be fairly limited in the international market.

  • It will not be a dual boot device rather it will be a seperate windows 10 flagship device….

  • Hmm.. sounds like an interesting phone.. the specs are certainly immpressive

    • Huawei haven’t announced any Windows phones after their failed half attempt with the W1, for which they blame the OS.
