Facebook Tests Snapchat-Like Disappearing Messages Feature

Snapchat’s disappearing messages have raised eyebrows and several concerns in every nook and corner of the globe by now, but it seems like the network has found a fan in Facebook. The company is testing out Snapchat-like disappearing messages for Facebook in test markets, a feature that might debut on your phone in the coming months.

The temporary message feature has so far been spotted in France only. It has already launched its own alternative to the service, previously called Poke in the past, which wasn’t successful.

How Does it Work?

It is quite simple in functionality. To send a timed message, you just click the new hourglass icon in the corner and convey whatever you want. After an hour, the message will disappear and in its place will appear an empty bubble so the person being contact can get back to you regarding the information. Tap on the icon again to get back to regular messaging.

“We’re excited to announce the latest in an engaging line of optional product features geared towards making Messenger the best way to communicate with the people that matter most. Disappearing messages gives people another fun option to choose from when they communicate on Messenger.” – Official statement from Facebook

Facebook is not positioning this feature as a Snapchat-killer, not as of yet. It will be yet another feature in Facebook’s hat which has been rolling features out in a spree. If successful, you may very well be able to send a new kind of message to your peeps very soon, too. No plans for expansion are being revealed for the time-being so we will have to wait and see.
