Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI’s) austerity drive to cut down the expenses came under severe criticism when reports came in that PM Imran Khan is using a helicopter for travelling to Bani Gala from Prime Minister House and vice versa.
Matters got more complicated after the Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Chaudhary Fawad Hussain tried to clarify the government’s ‘viewpoint’ for using helicopters. He stated that the fuel expenses for a helicopter are far less than that of a full convoy escorting the PM to Bani Gala. He clarified that the fuel cost per kilometre for a helicopter is Rs 55.
This statement has gone on to become the talk of the town, with the Twitterati indulging in some masterful trolling.

On a serious note, maintaining/operating a helicopter is way too expensive than a small aircraft due to its complicated machinery. Thus it is preposterous for Info Minister or anyone else to seriously mention 55 re per km. PKR 55,000 per hour might be close to actual depending upon the type of helicopter i.e. fully articulate, semi-articulate and non-articulate with the first being most expensive to operate and maintain regardless of size.
