Official: PTCL Doubles Broadband DSL Bandwidth

ptcl_boardbandPTCL has finally announced double bandwidth for its existing broadband users at no extra cost in celebrations of 23d March along with PTCL Smart TV to be Free till June 2009 in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad.

PTCL’s website says “PTCL management pleased to announce the following tariff for broadband internet facilities for its valued customers, with effect from March 23rd 2009. The existing package of 512Kbps will not be offered to new customers. Existing 512Kbps packages customers will be upgraded to 1MB package, 1MB to 2MB and customers of 2MB will be upgraded to 4MB”.

“Broadband Pakistan is now available in over 119 cities including Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Quetta, Faisalabad, Multan, Hyderabad, Peshawar, Gujrat, Gujranwala and Bhawalpur.

By the way, this upgrade process has been completed, and hundreds of PTCL broadband users have already confirmed this upgrade – at the same time, there were couple of PTCL broadband users who reported downgraded services as well.

This promotion from PTCL will for sure put tremendous pressure on Link Dot Net to lower their tariff.

So, 512KB DSL connections are no more offered by PTCL. Other plans are available as following

  • i am still not upgraded and my friends is upgraded twice first 512to 1mbps then a few days later automatically to 2mbps

  • this wudnt do much good, ptcl shud have lowered the monthly fair for its broadband service rather than to double the speed, with coper network of ptcl I strongly doubt the speed delivered at the modem of a user.
    also write a post abt speed tests so ptcl users can actually verify the speed rather than claims from ptcl.

  • I noticed upgrade almost 1 week ago, and it’s faboulus.However, PTCL guys are limited technically i.e their cabinets are not good enough to bear the load of Broadband.

  • Well i am not upgraded, many more didnt…
    PTCL took almost 35 days for the official launch and still they can’t even upgraded more than 65% of users…..
    and keep in mind its a PRIVATE company now :(

  • ptcl denies dsl services to me who lives almost in the midst of the wonderland called lahore.
    do they also deny services to some portions of 119 cities listed.
    i wonder?

      I would recommend u to contact LDN if u have not done yet.
      It gives u :

      1- Same package of 1 MB with 1000 Rs. Also include free WOL dial up in case DSL is down(same as ptcl does)
      2- Better customer services.

  • No Update for me. I still have 512Kbps.

    and yes it will definitely put pressure on other companies to reduce their charges. I ‘personally’ think PTCL is the best Broadband provider in the country.

  • My 512kbps is upgraded to 1mbps automatically & now downloading speed is 100kbps – 120kbps.

      they have done it too. I am using LDN in Lahore and getting double speed with my 512 kbps connection. It was inevitable as Aamir Attaa mentioned in the post.

    I am referring to your speedtest results given at March 24, 2009 at 3:55 am. If I am not wrong, our upload speed on PTCL is one fourth of our download speed. i.e. If we have a 1mb connection, the upload rate is 256kbps. So how come your result is showing 905kbps dl rate and 806 kbps as upload rate. When I tested with the same server, my download speed was 899kbps and upload was 202kbps.

    How did you upload speed is approx the same as download speed? Is it a trick, hack etc?

    • Yea its interesting for me too that Hyder’s upload speed is as high as download speed – which is normally not the case with every other broadband user in Pakistan…

      It would be great if he share how he attained this

    Here comes Link.Net with Double Speed of DSL Broadband. I am using Link.Net in Lahore and experiencing 90~100 KB constant download speed at night, normally around 11Pm. During day time it sticks to 60KB but anywayz it ROKSSSS.

  • Hmm, sounds interesting but i dont think this would add some value to the quality since the links are shared and the stream is forwarded on copper wires, i hope ptcl starts working on fiber optic project.
    Japan offered its services to pakistan to install a full fledged FTech System in its major cities for just 4 years taxes, but unfortunately our communication minster was not interested in the proposal and ultimately all of us are suffering from using this powerfull internet which is common place in many countries now a days!
    Use infinity, its powerful and good at the moment!

  • That’s fantastic news, but I’ve terminated PTCL DSL a long time ago due to their poor support and continuous issues with telephone line :(

    • @ Waseem >> Waseem Bhai one very useful tip for you. When I applied for PTCL’ DSL my phone line has so much noise that it was hard to even hear the dial tone. I didn’t said anything to PTCL after two complaints and instead wrote this problem to PTA. They then asked PTCL to rectify my issue and believe me the same line man who use to show me attitude and swear that my phone line cant get better than this came at my place and shifted my line from one pole to another and then he changed my pairs from exchange and cupboard. and after that my phone line is like more than good! i repeat more than good!

      and yes one more thing PTCL wrote two apology letters to me one for phone line and one for DSL.

  • Saad, hacks depend upon the problem at hand. To increase your DSL speed or to use ur stream upto the max limit you should be aware of some things, thats what i was talking about.
    First check your routers modulation. It should be ADSL_GMT only, since we are using copper wires.
    Than enable UPNP buffering.
    Check your US and DS stream their should be 63 or above, in case of 31 you should contact PTCL they will solve this problem.
    Disable firewall, use ParetoLogix’ XoftSpy for security or windows defender.
    Setup your IP on static mode.
    Set your DNS to be configured manually in routers configurations. (The default DNS is already in the boxes below).
    And restart your machine by saving all the setting in routers config.
    After restarting go and check your speed at
    http://speedtest.wateen.net.
    If you are getting 888Kbps in case of 1Mb link, i think thats enough for you.
    Otherwise if you are still facing slow speed than copy and paste modem status from routers configuration page, than we will be able to screen out issues and try to rectify them accordingly.
    Please note that the above mentioned tips are for single lined network. In case of sharing home network the tips change a bit.

  • Muntazir, thanks alot for spending your precious time to write all the steps. Finally I got to have a new PTCL line on the Optical Network Unit along with a new DSL connection. No noticeable difference in speed (getting 110+ kBps on a 1 Mbps line) but the uptime is quite better.

    You recommended ADSL_GMT (probably you meant G.DMT) as the modulation giving the reason that we have a copper wire network but it seems that with my ONU back-end my modem is using the same modulation. Do you have any ONU specific tips and tricks? I am using a D-Link ADSL 2+ Wireless Router.

  • Saad, the results in the image proto look good, what else do you want bro, i think the ping response is 107ms 0.99Mbps DS and .16Mbps US. The results are quite convincing.
    Please let me know the name of the device PTCL has given you, if its SHIRO than its better to update the firmware, once updated revise the tips and tricks, i hope it will work.
    And for that wireless router thing, yaar we are using wireless routers in our office, they are total suckup. You never know when they stop responding to network routes. But the problem has never occurred since i have configured it through the CD provided within.
    Perhaps you should also give it one try.

    • Plz tell me some tricks to increase my speed of ptcl broadband i hav 2mb package but i hav tested my speed on speed test is only 1.75Mbps download and 0.42Mbps upload
      i hav shiro modem on adsl_g.dmt mode .also tell me from where i can set upnp buffeing.

  • Can anyone suggest me how can we use any other DSL router other than the one provided by PTCL. Shiro in most cases. For example, I am also using shiro and I configured a DLink wireless router (DSL-G624T) for use only PTCL DSL connection. It works very well with one exception that it is disconnected after every 10 mins exactly and gets a new ip address.

    There isn’t any hardware problem in tis router as I have checked it with other ISP, but only with PTCL it disconnects after 10 mins. I tried to sort out the issue but couldn’t. The only reason which I can think about is since the MAC address of this Dlink router is different from the one provided by PTCL (shiro), so may the the PTCL server checks all connected clients after 10 min poll and if it finds any “alien” it simply disconnects it. Though it is reconnected after 1 min or so, bu the problem which occurs in result is that data comes in 10 min package format. And sometimes file being downloaded has to be restarted if the webserver doesn’t support resume function.

    This is only my conclusion and may not be true. Can someone give me a solution for this?

    Khurran there might be chance that you have configured it to disconnect every 10 minutes.
    Go to http://192.168.1.1
    login-> and than go to the connection settings where you provide userId and password for the connection.
    There you will see a field name max. alive time, its value is generally set to 10….Set it to 0 and than save the settings and restart the router.
    Let us know if problem is solved.

  • Khurram, I have the blue ZTE modem (ZXDSL 831II). Actually I had the DSL on my old copper line but got the ONU one for this purpose. The DSL person called me today for the installation but I had already configured it yesterday with my own ADSL wireless router (D-Link 2640B), did not use PTCL’s yet. Everything is working perfectly fine, no issues with the router or uptime!

    upload n download speeds depands on providing local area exchanges, that based on quality of cable. Noticed that most of our ptcl network is not fiber optical bassed, so that make some diffrences, i guess !!

    my problem is i got this 1 mb upgraded speed.but since a week ,it keeps getting disconnected every often .its like it is connected for few hours then again it is disconnected for several hours.and when i keep swtiching the router on and off several times then finally it gets connected again!!!!!!
    can you guys tel me what the problem is ??any idea?any other guys having the same kind of problem?btw i have connectyion in bahawalpur.thanks for the reply.

    PTCL servers are infected with viruses therefore the ports are not properly responding. If you wish to secure your computer and use your net with optimum speed that its better to download the security patch from microsoft server, Here you go follow the link below and download the patch. Install the patch and use internet.

    If the problem still persists and you net still don’t respond properly than i will suggest you yo reinstall your windows and than apply patch.

  • PTCL coverage and package are fine
    The only issue is the support specially technical or Customer support ..
    It happened many times i called and honestly speaking i have to wait for an hour after a long working day …
    I do work in the same field but i do not understand what is the root cause of this issue and no one from PTCL end taking any initiative to resolve it ..

    What you people say about it….
    do you get solution from the technical support if somehow your call will get attended …?
    do you think things should be done in that manners as PTCL is governing ..?

    Its an easy solution..:P
    and never go for the technical support :)
    But last night i observe no one was picking the call and even the electronic complaint IVR was not working ….
    I am shocked how PTCL is working…..

  • My 512kbps student package is not upgraded to 1mbps, my download speed is still between 50 to 60 kbps

  • hello all guys my problem is that i want to get a dsl connection of ptcl student package but the order entry page in the website of ptcl dont open and there is always an error i.e error 5oo internal server error . so how i can now i apply for a connection i consulted ptcl help line but they just say that do this and that waiting for a reply

      I don’t find any issues there.

      If you urgently need a connection then just got for any other ISP (LinkDotNet discounts 30% by just seeing the student ID card). With PTCL’s student package, first your application would be forwarded to the university admin and then AFTER APPROVAL it would take another week or so to get it installed. Now the approval time depends on the university you are in.

    2. speed was about 70 Kbps

    3. when we combine these two things we came to know that i was paying 1200 x 3 x 1.8 = 6480Rs/months
    1/3 conntivity x slow speed

    however, users nowadays doing Removal of Conficker Virus.

  • I used dsl 1MB (PTCL) package 8 TO 9 months and found following results.

    1. In a month i cal ptcl helpline almost 5 time to register my complain.but till NOW no body find out the basic reasons why my net create problems.

    2. speed was about 6.00 to 7.00 Kbps
    but some time it was good 90 to 105 kbps.

    3. so be prepare to get any company net connection. best of luck
