Cellular Tariff in Pakistan is Lowest in the world: PTA Chief

Chairman Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Dr Mohammed Yaseen has claimed that Pakistani cellular phone companies are providing cheapest call rates across the globe.

“In a recent conference in India, the Indians claimed that they were providing cheapest calls world over. However, I confronted and made calculations to prove that Pakistan was the country providing the most inexpensive phone facility to its consumers,” told Chairman PTA Dr Mohammed Yaseen in an interview with APP.

  • Well i think it is not a proud think to say that Pakistan is providing cheapest rate in the world. Rather I think PTA chairman should concentrate that what quality services pakistani operators are providing to the customers.

PTA as a regulatory authority must balance the both side i.e consumers as well as the operators(investors). I think PTA should set a price floor so that operators may servive in this market. This way the competetion will be on the basis that who is providing quality services to their customer rather than just the cheapest call rates.

Due to this lack of attention by PTA, all operators(investors) are suffering and trying to run away. which is not good for the country image interms of protecting its investors..

  • PTA is looking at one side of the picture and overlooking aspects of employment, Foreign Direct Investment, Quality of Service etc.

  • I don’t think a price floor should be setup. Companies should be lean, mean and efficient. When you set a price floor, that will increase in a dead-weight loss and economically it is not recommended.

We have seen some companies, who are rather top-heavy and that has resulted in them bearing losses. In a competitive market, it is survival of the fittest.

  • Due to devalue of Pak Currency, The charges that Celluar Company in the name of Service charges, ops charges, Breakfast and lunch charges etc…. and one last bonus charges, which customers dont know till the their balance is empty. its not cheaper, It maybe cheaper to chairman, as he is not paying, govt is paying
