Tough time ahead for local web hosting companies, given that PTCL can manage billing so easily through its already running landline billing system. Sorry to say but you are absolutely wrong here. Nothing is going to happen to local hosting companies because PTCL became “aggressive” in this market. Local companies are losing customer only because of their bad business practice. Credit Card is not a requirement with local hosts. Most offer various other payment methods.
PTCL can never (and I mean never ever) provide the hosting that is required to run a highly available site.
Even if they come back after new birth (you know the Urdu saying for that ;)), the pathetic support, the lame excuses, the carelessness of customer service they have will always remain their speciality.
Usman, i agree with you – if i was sure of quality and support from local companies, or say PTCL, i would never ever give heavy bucks to foreign companies for services.

Initiating a premier web hosting service is certainly a good move. Setting aside the problems associated, if they are taken care properly i assume that is a new dawn, as having local service it will eliminate the latency and other issues. most of the websites are hosted at US or managed by US operated companies. So each request has to travel half world with thousands of devices and connections in between to reach the prime US backbone and then the data to travel back to PAK. It will create new ways to form Local highspeed services.
Yup..a data center with unreliable connectivity.. PTCL’s staff couldn’t handle the broadband setup, how would they manage the data center????
i think it would be a great setup. PTCL should have started it years ago , why we pay to data centers abroad ? i myself paying around $580 every month for three servers why not i pay these to my own country ?
And who says PTCL wont be able to give a reliable service, with due respect to all views above , but i am a network admin myself and i know PTCL can do it very well.
What happened to their broadband is a bit commercial rather then technical.
they gave service on a very large scale and they dont have trained team , Just imagine normal line mans are coming to start your DSL connection and one day they will be trained :) no matter they know what is TCP/IP or not.
and still if u visit KSA,UAE,Oman in other GCC you will come to know how better and cheaper is your Internet :)
but running a data center is an operation inside a building and i really appreciate if PTCL is going to start such thing without any limits then surely Pakistan will be going to earn a lot from foreign customers too.

Hoping for something good is one thing, denying the facts is another.
And if you really think that PTCL can provide a similar service (or even close to it) to “webmasters” for whom up-time is the most important thing, then you live in a dream world that doesn’t exist and that will ever exist.
Try to look at things with clear mind.
Its very good that they interduce hosting service. Prices are still high but i think well be reasonable according to their practice. However customer support remain problem i think they will tune it by time. Conclude proud to be a new product service for pakistan
Data Center looks great! PTCL has all the funding subsidized by the tax payers to build a Tier 2 data center. However, implications of tax payer subsidized business model ends up hurting private enterprise. PTCL has everything to gain and genuine private enterprise Hosts have everything to loose.
PTCL can loose money until they can run their competitors out of business and this is not an easy business proposition for small Host.
Beside running a data center is not an easy task; it requires expertise in Telecom, Networking, Servers, Cooling, Power, Backup generators and much more and I doubt PTCL has it all figured out but I am sure money can buy the essential talent.
Data Center Services are going to increase rapidly for Pakistan and there is lots of growth for products like cloud computing…

i am not hoping , i am wishing PTCL.
And i just not hear the things , i am myself a hardcore network admin and we at PTCL have one of the best networks.
And i wasn’t talking about web hosting , thats very small thing, a data center for Web hosting is just not a difficult thing , i can make a data center in my home for web masters…
its not about Web , neither PTCL needs to invest so much just for web masters …on a Data Center there is much more for we pay.
My point is that if i am paying $580 every month to US data center then why not to Pakistan ?
And how says PTCL can’t give uptime ,its not a dream brother its just matter of responsible men at data center and i am sure PTCL will care about it .

Basically, you have the Linux kernel and a GUI. On top of that, most people install many other packages (server functions, productivity, games, utilities, whatever). Some Linux install discs include many or all of the available packages so that you can select the programs during the initial install and do it all in one step. Others only include the bare necessities to get Linux installed and then the packages will be downloaded later when you choose to install them. Some Linux packages even offer the Net Install option, where you only have a 50MB boot disc and then everything is downloaded from the net when you install it.

I’ve discovered that Microsoft security essentials is okay if you have nothing better. Luckily for many there are significantly better free software alternatives which are faster and much more accurate at discovering viruses on your computer. More importantly, you will find far better applications which can be active and obstruct trojans prior to they install. Of course MS also guards real-time, however is not nearly as effective.
