Future of Adsense in Pakistan

It’s dark, and you know it well – just in case if you aren’t aware of recent massacre by Google then the information for you is that Google has banned hundreds of Pakistani adsense accounts by giving odd reasons to each of them, majority of which didn’t make sense to a common man.

Like all businesses – at times Google plays unfair, and it’s fair on their part to save themselves and their stakeholders. Let me give you examples,

I know of this Pakistani website which is displaying adsense ads and it should get banned by all definitions and terms of services, but it’s not banned. Reason: This website serves more than 100 million impressions a month.

I am sure this website in question would have a dedicated support engineer deputed to take care of the matters concerning to it.

On other hands, I know of this another website which recently got banned by adsense, just because the website was displaying ads below navigation bar. Which is weird because Google itself preaches publishers to place ads below navigation bar for high CTR.

Another ban reason for thousands of publishers, over the years, is fraud click. They ban the publisher for life, meaning that a publisher banned for fraud click can never participate in adsense for whole life.

I am just wondering, isn’t it possible for Google (a company that spends billions of dollars for research and development) to not to allow second click on adsense ads whenever it is done by same IP and/or same cookie?

Or can’t they cap clicks done in certain duration? For instance if I am given an option to not to allow more than one click from one IP in one week (even if it has multiple users on one network) – I would definitely go for it. I am sure many would opt for it – to avoid permanent ban.

I understand that there would be people asking their FnF including aunts and little cousins to click on their ads, sure go ahead and ban them. But what about those publishers who have been religiously following your TOS and one day someone from their competition comes in and starts click bombing their ads, assumingly from same IP?

Will you ban him/her? You sure will. I have seen such cases myself.

This is how exposed Google adsense is to exploiters.

So like any other business, adsense has loopholes, which can’t be filled. Google has purposefully kept these loopholes to keep itself secured.

Talking specifically about the recent mass-ban of Pakistani publishers – it was our fault too. Like we mentioned in our past post, we Pakistanis vigorously copied international blogs to setup websites. Then did hefty amount of SEO to bring in traffic and monetized it through adsense. Which isn’t legit in many ways.

So all those content lifters sank, not alone but drowned many legit publishers along with them.

Why Pakistan was Targeted?

Have you read my this article: Why Does a Pakistani Website Earn 32 Times Lesser than any American Counterpart?

If not – then please go ahead and read it to understand that Pakistani traffic is of not much value to advertisers.

To put it in simple words: Pakistanis can’t buy products online (due to lack of ecommerce infrastructure), the ads we see are for the free services or (product) information only. This equation translates into a situation where reader/website visitor won’t make money for advertiser.

For many this is fine, for others – this is just the loss of advertising budget, i.e. no return on investment at all.

Coupled with this if content is replicated over hundreds of websites, then why a network like adsense won’t target Pakistanis in particular? I hope you have the answer.

What’s next?

I know it’s ugly, but if Google was your primary source of revenue then you are done. You need to get over with it. You can’t convince Google that you are a legit blogger (even if you are) who puts plenty of effort for generating content. Google won’t listen to you – you need to believe this hard fact, they are least concerned.

I have spoken with some senior people at Google and they are not bothered with whatever perceptions we have got for Google.

There are chances that Google won’t even reply you, or if they do – it will be a pre-drafted email with meaningless and negative message.

So it’s better to re-plan your monetization policy, by either switching to other networks (just like Hamad explained here) or by giving up with it.

For many they deserved this – for others it’s bitter reality and hard luck, the unfortunate end that’s attached with online business models.

Can we Expect a Better Internet After This?

Considering that easy money is gone, all those content lifters will be go away with only legit bloggers left for quality content. This is somewhat better than it was before. Not that we are happy with the situation – but everything happens for good, that how I believe in Allah.

A Local CPM network

is what we need. We saw many local ad networks coming in with big claims, but no one could survive. I will discuss the reasons in a separate post – but to understand that survival of local digital industry, we must get a good CPM network up running in next 6-12 months. Or the local content that brag about will go down the drain.

  • Massacre! Perfectly described scenario!

Aamir Bhai, I’m looking forward to your next post about ‘Local CPM Network’. I remember you mentioned a guy (I forget his name) who is trying!!!

And also mention how our local CPM entrepreneurs who are striving could go against Advertising agencies who are simply awarding ads to their favorites

  • Google has always been and will always be unfair to sites who have a low amount of visitors no matter how good the quality of the material is.

It always detects the traffic from Pakistan as spam much like every other ad service but the difference is that others do allow us to keep our accounts whereas google doesnt allow us to do so.

And the bad thing is their support if your account gets banned, there is a 5% chance of getting your account unlocked if you get it locked as they will produce lame reasons like “The quality of the content is too low” although they will never tell you what good quality really is.

Your best alternative if you are in Pakistan is Clicksor, i have been using them for years now and they do pay on time and dont ban you for crappy reasons

  • No doubt, it is a bitter fact and we have to accept it. But i think that all of this situation affects 50% publishers (either directly or indirectly) at this time. Moreover, adsense was misused in Pakistan drastically and it is also directly and indirectly related to recent massive ban.

After a lot of experience in adsense in Pakistan, i have came to the point that if you are a good publisher of Adsense, then it is only LUCK that you would survive to have active adsense account with good earnings.

Pakistan is notorious for fraud clicks because everyone want to get money. The reason to this is that, there is inflation in country and majority of the population is unemployed. Due to this, people move to internet for money and misuse sources to earn money (like Google). So, Google bans them and other innocent people also become victims.

    LAST RESULT:
Unless justice, peace, opportunities and good system is not provided to Pakistani nation, we can’t expect anything better in future.

  • Totally agree with you, Now we need to find other ways except adsense.
They disabled many accounts and targeted Pakistani’s.

Google Drone attack hit many Pakistani’s including me.

  • Rightly said Amir bhai, you mentioned as this is our fault too i would agree we people try to find shortcuts for making money by any means and that may cause problems and end result you can see… hundred of accounts ban.

We all know same stuff, lots of other folks doing even in US and EU but you know when name PAKISTAN associated with any thing that means some thing wrong “Qurbani ka Bakra Pakistan he hota ha”

        • i think not workable.
          reasons are
not having proper e commerce infrastructure
no mechanism of money inflow & return on investment which is the biggest hindrance of local ads display

i think we should move in right direction of monetizing the local industry with some innovative services…

it is now the requirement of the time ….

  • I think money is not the only motivation. If someone was “actually” creating quality content, losing the revenue will not demotivate them. In fact lots of blogs that do not serve ads have much better content than those who serve ads.

I would like to point your attention to the case of the blogger you mentioned, the one who was pissed that Google first suggested to put the ads below navigation and then banned him for that. Google also recommends that Ads should look like Ads not like Navigation menu. They recommend blending in but not to a point that it becomes difficult for a user to differentiate ads from navigation.

What we presume as genuine content is not so genuine. Most Pakistani tech blogs are just rephrasing tech news that are already published on thousands of other websites. Such as features of new iphone, jailbreaking, apps reviews and so on. Web is so full of such websites. This content, no matter how smartly rephrased is still not genuine.

I am getting in touch with publishers and have met hundreds of them and they all had rephrased tech news sites, fashion websites, Wallpaper websites. I think the problem is Quality here.

Pakistanis should realize that they can not just steal other people’s content and rephrase it and then publish it. They can not just create a website that publishes news that are already published on thousands of other websites. Such practices cause Advertisers to loose money. Since Google is serving ads on thousands of websites they need to provide advertisers a better value for their buck.

  • A master piece article by Aamir Ata. This is one of your best works ever, where you narated the story with deep details and its results with a great sense of understanding.

Finally you are moving towards becoming a great writter :)

  • I believe that local adnetwork is going to crash, as there will be no advertisers to pay. Big giants of advertising trust google adsense. No advertiser, no money and no business.

  • Long before there was adsense, there was adwords. If most Pakistani companies aren’t willing to advertise using adwords (with rates at Rs 1/click or even less), what makes you think they will advertise on a local ads network? A local ad network certainly will not have the same kind of click-fraud detection that Google spent *YEARS* developing.

Remember, if people are having their friends and relatives click on ads on their sites, it is the advertisers who are suffering. They blame Google, Google shuts down adsense for us. If we set up our own ads service, it will need to be as good as Google’s adwords for fraud detection.

    • I used a term CPM ad network – i am sure you are familiar with it. With millions of budget from (Pakistani) advertisers – if it’s streamlined through ad network and is distributed equally to all the websites based on their reach, sure the equation gonna work.

Hurdle is not the fraud click or the rates, it’s our advertising agencies which won’t contract with this ad network.

  • Agree with Bilal:

“Unless justice, peace, opportunities and good system is not provided to Pakistani nation, we can’t expect anything better in future.”

  • i would like to tell you that one of the main reason why google has banned is the CTR or EPCM rate . For Example if someone place google ads soo good that his CTR got 2% to 3% and if he is from pakistan . Then banned option is waiting for you.

  • i wish if facebook gonna launch its own facebook adsense thing . that will teach google a good lesson about how to respect publisher.

  • I think we should join forces and setup a local network. Please leave a message here if you would be interested to participate in any way.

  • if this is the case than we should switch to others like infolink, adbrite etc…
anyone have a experience with them ??
    waiting of your reply …

  • Pakistani website which is displaying adsense ads ……….. website serves more than 100 million impressions a month !!!!

    Name of website anyone??

  • My website was also blocked, they sent me message that its banned in best interest of their marketers. This is not the end, later after a month they removed my blog and did not sent me even a reason, while i was posting topics and was updating it regularly. They are just against Pakistan, Pakistanis and Islam.

  • i tried hard to make a adsense account but enable to do that…can any brother please guide me whats wrong with me
    thanks..please mail me

  • with google adsense policies, it is dark all over the world and trust me when they start banning USA like they did to Asian ,They will be consider as fraud company.

  • Hello, I diccovered this blog on Google. It is unbelievably interesting subject. We will be referring to this article again.

  • I think tey must have read the ads in newspapers that tells people that they can earn money by enrolling in a “earn money from adsense” program where the company sends them an IP spoofing/proxy software and people are told to click on ads and stay on the landing page for 5-10 minutes.

I am afraid Pakistanis are notorious for using their minds only for abusing every thing they can get their hands on.
