Windows Phone Store Reaches 2 Billion Downloads

Window-StoreGiven the flourishing situation of the app business, it’s quite clear that Microsoft’s Windows Phone Store is seeing it’s fortunes change too. The Store recently hit overall downloads of 2 billion.

The figure took roughly 34 months, just two months shy of 3 years to be achieved. The good thing here though is that the last of those two billions came in just over 6 months.

And while the figure isn’t as impressive to the 50 billion plus download figures of App Store and Google Play, two billion downloads still seems like an impressive number for an operating system with about 4% of worldwide marketshare.

It also signifies that the terrible ecosystem of Windows Phone has finally improved quite a lot.

The figure also roughly translates to around 50 apps downloaded per device which is equally impressive a number.

Given the increasing rate of downloads which the OS is seeing, the next billion will probably be achieved even sooner, and it will be shocking if it isn’t.

  • I wouldn’t be surprised if those numbers turn out to be highly exaggerated, or Microsoft also included all Windows 8 & RT downloads in that figure. I use a Windows Phone, along with an S3 and an iPad. There’s no better way to say this, but when compared to Google Play Store and specially Apple’s AppStore, WP store sucks!

    • It does suck, but I feel its getting better. Plus apps like nokia music are killer.

  • Nokia has destroyed themselves by agreement with Microsoft. If Nokia goes to Android then Nokia can beat apple and samsung within one year.

    • Many people don’t realize that if Nokia had gone with android, they would have destroyed themselves by now. By now, they would not have existed.

First of all, look at HTC, LG, Sony and other Android OEMs. They are not making much money from their android phones, only Samsung is with their powerful Galaxy brand.

Secondly, when Nokia was choosing between Windows Phone and Android, they saw that all the OEMs went with Google’s platform and they knew that Google won’t financially help them. Google isn’t financially helping any of its OEMs. And Nokia need money. Microsoft gave them the money which they needed. Now Nokia is slowly progressing while HTC is still loosing money.

  • Nokia needs to accept that Android is the future …. they have a very innovative mindset and they are wasting it in investing on Microsoft …..Nokia please set your ego aside …

      • I know that is true that samsung has reaped the benefits uptill now …but i feel that samsung has already tipped at s3 and since s4 they are following the same footsteps as apple ….htc , motorola and lg are starting to make a mark …with htc one x , lg g2 and motorola droid razr ….. i feel most of the low end phones are very much occupied by these phones…..HTC will be in top 3 in the next 2 years

        • Sorry. HTC won’t top Samsung in the near future. Samsung still sold millions of s4.
