Standard Chartered Pakistan’s customers were recently left shocked when they received transaction alerts through SMS and emails for withdrawals of around Rs. 50,000 from their bank accounts without any action on their part.
There were a few bank customers who did not even get any report through SMS or email but were made aware of the hack when their ATMs did not process their transactions and their debit cards were blocked.
It is yet unclear that how many Standard Chartered customers were impacted with this hacking attempt, however, traces reveal that this incident siphoned off a huge money in a few seconds from Pakistan to England, where the headquarter of SCB is operated.
Early investigation reveals that SCB Pakistan ATMs were hacked from England
In desperate attempts, some of the customers who mainly maintained salary accounts, made phone calls to customers care support and few of them rushed to related branches to report the incident.
The bank initially responded positively to all affected customers and informed them that a hack on the bank’s online system was responsible for the inconvenience. These customers were assured that their stolen money would be reimbursed as soon as possible but it would take time to get the details of the affected customers and reimburse the money.
Things weren’t straight forward for everyone though. “When I contacted branch manager, he said that your account got trouble due to criminal activity”, an affected customer told ProPakistani. “I was advised to meet bankers working in the fraud department in order to get my money back.”, he added.
Despite the promise of quick action, there are many customers who have not been reimbursed their money yet, which is simply poor quality of customer service.
The inconvenience didn’t stop at stolen money. Customers were also deprived of debit card services as the hackers accessed data records of customers debit cards to transfer money from Pakistan to England. So in addition, customers’ debit cards were blocked by bank and such customers were asked to get their debit cards re-issued by SCB again.

Farhan Ahmed, spokesman of Standard Chartered Bank, said that attacks on the bank were not new. A recent skimming attempt at SCB ATM took place which is not unique but a common activity in the banking industry of Pakistan.
ATM skimming is a type of fraud which occurs when an ATM is compromised by a skimming device, a card reader which can be disguised to look like a part of the machine. The card reader saves the users’ card number and pin code, which is then replicated into a counterfeit copy for theft.
“The money in the customers’ bank accounts is insured and given to them in case of any such incident. The money of the customers is being reimbursed and majority of them received their cash in their accounts already”, he added.
It is an irony that despite the continuous growth in profitability and increase in customer base, the bank failed to equip its operations with advanced technology which could have prevented such a hacking attempt from being successful.
If foreign banks with international repute such as Standard Chartered Bank can’t ensure the security of their systems, how can people trust financial institutions and accept advanced service like mobile banking and internet banking?
Of course, incidents of fraud happen in advanced countries as well but in Pakistan perception is more than reality when it comes to banks and technology and this will surely deal a blow to the reputation of SCB in the country.

You don’t have to move your money. These attempts have been happening with every bank, more commonly with other banks.
Better idea is to open another account in SCB, use that account to keep your money and don’t get a debit card with it. Keep only minimal amount of money in the account which has ATM card.

So you mean if you don’t activate internet banking, you’re off the grid? I don’t think so, really. Hackers are not always intercepting the internet banking traffic between you and the servers, they are breaching the bank’s information network itself.
As per my knowledge (added with an expert developer’s knowledge as well who argued with me in my office), only that part of the banking records can be decrypted right now which have online presence; which means only those accounts are vulnerable who have server presence in the online world. Offline presence is not being harmed as of now; and that is technically legit as well!
Do you think banks are keeping OFFLINE accounts as well? Can you imagine how utterly impossible that is to do?
How does a transaction made in branch number 500 get reflected on an ATM located anywhere else in the (let’s consider for simplicity) same city? – You could easily withdraw like millions without no one even knowing until EOD.
All banks are Online at some level. And when you hear the word “Online” you should know its crackable.
As for decryption, bro, It sounds really stupid to expect that any high profile bank would use a sub-par algorithm for the purpose. Additionally, encryption has hardly any relation to this case here, we’re not talking about sniffing or interception here. Though MD5 and RSA variations are practically impossible to crack which are quite widely used everywhere.
The bottomline is, you can always ‘try’ your best to be safe, but in reality, someone might just find a way in, if they are capable.

I was thinking about moving to SCB from UBL. But after the incident I tought otherwise. BTW incident is couple of weeks old I think.
Hi This is not one time incident. this has happened 3 times to one of my collegues within 4-5 months costing near 200K Rs. One transaction took place from England (recent one) others from South east Asian countries. Its very irresponsible of Standard Chartered Bank to let it happen for so many months now. It should have taken measures on immediate bases and atleast blocked international access to the cards to secure local customers. And above all their process takes more than 1.5 months to return the money. For Salaried person this is heck of time to stay without pay. Management is procrastinating and not taking any measures to secure the customers, which it can do with small initiatives.
Can easily happen on UBL as well. Please be more careful around any ATM.

It happened to me too. Transaction changes were deducted (a couple thousand) and I never even received SMS alert for which I get charged every month. I only came to know about it while scanning my Internet banking history.

The bigger they come, the harder they fall!! Apparently the British government doesn’t allow foreign governments to carry out investigations on English soil, unless requests are submitted to the Border Security, who then forward it to MI-6, who then carry out the investigation. So it makes sense that the cyber-criminals decided to transfer the money to England. Considering the state of Pakistani politics and the government, the people who had their money stolen will die of old age by the time the investigation concludes.

It doesn’t matter which bank it is or how sophisticated they are. Such skimming devices can only be avoided by user vigilance and biometric verification. So I wouldn’t put the entire blame on SCB in all of this.
Policies should be made to introduce retina scanning or palm verification. Not sure, but I think State Bank needs to play a role in all of that. Plus there should be more awareness campaigns for people who are unaware of such scams.

It happened with me and it looks transactions posted on my account repeatedly on daily basis from 6 FEB to date. And they are ATM withdrawals. After loosing penalty of money I have removed the remaining from SCB. Launched a complaint and thinking to raise it with State Bank of Pakistan. This is totally ridiculous if they disappoint me by not giving me my stolen money back.
It’s better to just keep 10-15K in SCB account.
To all who are saying that it can happen to any bank, let me clarify technically that yes it can happen but all the banks have devices installed like (Firewall, ADSs) that can block the access on network from outside.
Second, like TK told that transactions are performed on daily basis, the accounts on bank have limit of number of transactions perDay/perWeek/perMonth/perYear along with the amount so these type of transactions can not be performed on physical ATM or POS or Internet Banking. It can only happen when the main system is compromised.
So ultimately it looks that SCBs main Host is compromised in England and the network/security team is unable to close this issue.

I just checked with Standard chartered helpline , according to them , it happened two weeks ago with not only standard chartered , but other banks too, this has been resolved at that time
Same happened with the Barclays Bank Account holders a week ago. ATM transactions from England. Bank has assured money will be back but will take 1-2 months.
Same goes with my Meezan Bank account as well. ATM transctions from England in Jan 2015.

I have also lost my 50,000 Rs from SCB bank through ATM, Snatcher snatch my ATM card and went HBL ATM machine and withdrawn 50k Amount easily, I have launched online and in written complain to my Local SCB branch as well as in FRM Depart, They work on this and fail to resolve this issue and closed this case. I am going to expedite this case again on higher authorities.

I dont use my SCB card. but when I did in in Feb/March 2014 the transaction wouldnt process. when I called they told me my card may have been compromised and a copy of it exists in the market. I had to get a new one. I dont know when exactly they blocked it since I hadnt been using it since August/September 2013 but they didnt even notify me and i found out when I had to make the transaction.
