PEMRA Raises Objection Over Zong and OPPO TV Ads

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority has showed concerns over two TV advertisements from Zong 4G and OPPO Mobile, we have checked.

According to details, TV ads in question are beyond Pakistan’s cultural limits and they are shot in a manner that’s not with-in our local acceptable norms.

Zong’s recent AD, that plays on a song “Boom Boom”, showed a male model getting hit by cricket ball between the legs, while OPPO Mobile’s “Selfie First” TV ad was shot with indecent clothing for female models.

PEMRA said that it received countless complaints from users about these indecent ads and authority itself found the TV ads to be objectionable.

In response, PEMRA has asked Pakistan Broadcasters Association to get the TV ads fixed by either removing the objectionable parts or by scrapping the ads altogether.

PEMRA gave a deadline of two days to both Zong and OPPO to get their ads fixed or they could be banned as per local laws.

  • Yes PEMRA, showing explosions and people dying on screen is totally within cultural norms but heaven forbid we show people having fun. That stuff is illegal. You have your priorities straight.

      • Don’t bother man, this nation belongs to stone age and they are very proud about their double standards, hypocrisy and ignorance. They don’t even know the concept of “freedom of choice” or “rights”.

      • Obviously everyone has different definition of what the “limits” should be. Majority of the target audience was obviously fine with these ads since I didn’t hear about any backlash online which you do with most objectionable things these days.

        As far as I’m concerned, If something isn’t spreading hate, inciting violence or hurting someone, I’m okay with it. We have a lot bigger problems to worry about right now than “fahashi”.

        • I agree sir. Its not inciting violence. But i m not particularly concerned about this ad only. Sir what the whole media is showing. It directly dos’nt incites violence. But it acts as an instigator. Every Dramas showing rape cases controversial things. It is educational in some way. But showing too much boldness is’nt necessory as much of our illiterate audience specially kids cannot stand the educational value. They find it attractive

            People see news about crime & corruption every day and that does not incite anyone to go punch people who demand bribes or protest when police don’t do anything. Do you think people are only “instigated” to do immitate things?

            • I get insitigated sir. I instigate other people to do good. At my level at least. Thats how as far as i can go.. i get instigated. So i feel others may also…

            • My neighbours’s child saw a movie. In which a little boy was hanging from curtains. He imitated. Broke his arm. I think this is what we may say instigation

              • Kids will always immitate. Might as well ask your neighbours to turn the TV off for a decade or so.

          • Societal problems like rape, child abuse, repression of wome, and abuse of women rights etc are all very real and serious problems we have in Pakistan. The only way to deal with them is to have social and very public commentary about them and educate the people that it is wrong. If we hide or shy away from having discussions on issues that are uncomfortable for us, it only helps the sick minded perpetrators since no one is willing to confront them because most of us find it uncomfortable.

            I should also probably mention that all these issues are not only inhumane but also un-Islamic as well.

    • Interest has nothing to do with it. Even without interest just look on the streets and see how Pakistani awam treat each other, especially people who are poor. Is driver of Mehran treated same way as driver of Audi?

  • If you thought you were protecting your personal details by just crossing out the mobile and whatsapp number and leaving facebook as it is, then I’m afraid to say that you have made a pretty stupid and obvious mistake. I know for a fact that you have a telenor mobile number and even though I won’t post it here, you should be aware that it is accessible to everyone in a couple of mouse clicks.

    A word of advice; making your full name public on the internet especially your family name and not controlling your facebook account’s privacy settings means kissing goodbye to your privacy/personal details.

  • Pemra please also check YouTube Ads. You cannot continue to just regulate Pakistani brands and on medium by local operators. It is your mandate to check all media even if online.

  • Skin has become the sign of so called moderanity n progress. Even i found pepsi ad so much improper. It has become a trend to show girls n boys chilling out together in such a way. That is so much against our value. N remember i m not an old man proclaiming censurship. I m youngster too n know our limits as a muslim.

  • Well if it is “objectionable” for you then don’t watch, no one is forcing you; but you also can’t force others or deprive them of something that they like or are okay with.

    I think it is PEMRA that needs to be closed, all it has done is taken our “freedom of choice”; we were so much better without it!
