Samsung Enters Augmented Reality With Odyssey Headset

Samsung is expanding its reach in the VR market, targeting PC users with it’s latest headset. Called the Odyssey, the headset supports the Windows Mixed Reality platform and is one of the best options in the market right now.

The back of the Odyssey features two AMOLED panels (rather than conventional LCDs) both with 110 degree field-of-view rather than the standard 95. It is also slightly adjustable for customization according to your requirements.

They come at a resolution of 1400 x 1600, which is a notch above the 1400 x 1400 offered by other competing options in the market.

Comes With Motion Controllers and More

The Odyssey also comes with 360-degree spatial headphones, built by AKG. We can’t say much about the build quality for now, though the matte black finish does look pretty decent.

There are two motion controllers, which feature the specs recommended by Microsoft for the platform. Odyssey does away with the wires thanks to its use of built-in positional tracking.

SteamVR Support

The gaming library consists primarily of games supported by SteamVR platform. The preview for the platform starts today for developers, while for the general public it will be available sometime this fall. Developers can also choose to develop titles for the Windows Mixed Reality APIs.

Pricing and Availability

Unlike the Gear VR, the Odyssey will come at a higher price-tag of $499 when it hits the market on November 6th. That’s $100 more than similar options by Acer, though the added functionality make it worth the extra money. It will come with the two motion controllers out-of-the-box.

The success of not only the platform but the entire industry is still a huge question mark, however the rising number of entrants in the industry does give it a better chance than before.
