Islamabad Police Launches Social Media Monitoring

This is the age when people are engaging more on the social media with the rise of Facebook, WhatsApp, Snapchat, Twitter and various blogs. People from different backgrounds come on these platforms and express their views.

Sometimes these sentiments, especially the negative ones, grow so much that it takes the shape of physical assaults on each other. We have seen multiple cases recently where two or more people or groups have started to hate each other on the social media and it grew so much that physical fights were unavoidable.

One of the other key usage of this social media is that people who otherwise never comment on the government or administration policies because of various reasons (protesting, time waste) have started raising their voice in favor or against certain initiatives of the government or city administration .

With lots of variety in the usage of the social media, it was only a matter of time that someone took the initiative and started listening and paying attention to peoples’ concerns, appreciations or criticism and build a constructive tool to respond to them, either by taking the corrective measures or educating them about the right rationale behind a certain initiative or particular administrative unit of the government

Even though many semi-official organizations have hired some private resources to express their point of view on the social media, we are not aware of any government organization which has taken this measure and started monitoring social media for constructive use.

Islamabad Police, on the other hand, has taken this initiative to implement a social medial management software integrated with a Big Data platform and the vision of the ICT Police and its management was a rarity among government institutes.

They wanted to monitor the sentiments of the citizens of Islamabad on the initiatives taken by ICT police for various things, be it a traffic route or their actions during the famous “Dharnas”. At the same time this software allows them to express their view about certain incidents and also educate the citizens of Islamabad with the latest upcoming events.

A more important feature of this tool (Citizens of Islamabad should feel happy about this) is that the police has taken a measure to keep them safe from cyber crime. The police has gained the ability to identify the social media abusers, spreading negativity about the government and the normal citizens as well.

With the great move of integrating this Social Media Management tool with their Big Data Platform, they will be able to track these abusers or trolls in a matter of seconds.

Social media management has already gone live, ICT police has trained their staff on this latest technology. Big Data Integration will also be going live by the end of January 2018.

Their IT department has done a great job by saving the government’s money and hiring international firms directly for implementation. They chose to create a technology system where multiple vendors joined in to achieve this goal. The Big Data and Social Medial partner, Metis International has been chosen for adopting PPRA’s best practices .

  • Big data is data sets that are so voluminous and complex that traditional data processing application software are inadequate to deal with them. Big data challenges include capturing data, data storage, data analysis, search, sharing, transfer, visualization, querying, updating and information privacy.
