Half of Karachi’s Daily Water Supply is Unfiltered

More than 50% of the 140 million gallons of water supplied in Karachi every day is unfiltered.

During an inspection visit to the laboratory of the Pipri Water Filtration Plant, the Head of the Judicial Commission on Water and Sanitation in Sindh Justice (retired), Amir Hani Muslim was informed that not even 50% of the water that’s being supplied to Karachi is filtered.

The local government department, Managing Director of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board and other officials were also part of the visit.

Chief Chemist Post Vacant

Upon Justice Muslim’s inquiry, he was told that the post of Chief Chemist is vacant at present, however, word has been spread in this regard. The officials assured him that a suitable person will be found soon through public advertisements.

Justice Muslim was startled when the officials told him that the water tests are conducted only once after every 15 days.

The respective officials then explained the details of the expansion and funds of the filtration plant. The former Supreme Court judge said:

I will now visit various water filtration schemes to monitor their conditions personally before the next hearing.

The next hearing of the commission is on January 25. Justice Muslim also visited sewage treatments plants I and II in Karachi on Saturday. He showed great concern over the condition of the plants.

The current investigation is being done on the orders of the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court had ordered the commission to investigate the responsible authorities who have failed to provide filtered drinking water, improve sanitation system and curb its impact on the environment in Sindh.
