In 2010, a massive landslide occurred in the area surrounding the famed Karakoram mountains. This landslide, it should be mentioned, ended up claiming the lives of 20 people, and blocked the flow of water at the Hunza river for 5 months.
Following this natural calamity, the Pakistani Army intervened. They worked towards clearing the landslide and stopping the blockade which had halted water supplies from the Hunza River. After the blockade was cleared, a large, beautiful lake with clean blue water formed in its place. This location came to be known as theĀ Attabad Lake.

Before work on the Attabad tunnels was completed by Chinese and Pakistani engineers, the only route for the locals and tourists to cross the lake, was through a small boat. Interestingly, these boats were also used to transport cars and SUVs!
The lake looks even more picturesque when the mountains around it are covered in snow!
When the temperature drops below the freezing point, you can walk and even run with your luggage over the 100 ft deep lake!
After the completion of Attabad tunnels, tourists can now go on a non-stop journey to the top of Khunjerab.
