Pakistan to Appoint Its First Female Chief Justice for Balochistan High Court

Syeda Tahira Safdar is most likely to be appointed as the first woman Chief Justice in Balochistan High Court (BHC). This development is doubly significant given the fact that she will also be considered as the first female Chief Justice in Pakistan.

Chairman of Judicial Court of Pakistan (JCP), Chief Justice Saqib Nisar will hold a meeting on Monday, July 30th, that would appoint Syeda Tahira Safdar as the new Chief Justice of BHC for the next 5 years.

She is expected to replace the current Chief Justice ‘Muhammad Noor Muskanzei’ of BHC on his retirement. He is scheduled to retire on 1st September this year as he was appointed back in December 2014.

About Syeda Tahira Safdar

Mrs. Safdar was born on Oct 5, 1957, in Quetta. She also happens to be the daughter Syed Imtiaz Hussain Baqri Hanafi, a renowned lawyer.

After receiving basic education from Cantonment Public School in Quetta, she went on to get her bachelor’s degree from the Government Girls College, Quetta. She got her law degree from the University Law College, Quetta in 1980. She also holds a Master’s degree in Urdu literature from the University of Balochistan.

Her achievements include:

  • Passed a competitive exam held by the Balochistan Public Service Commission after which she was appointed as a civil judge on April 22, 1982.
  • Senior Civil Judge on June 29, 1987.
  • Additional District and Sessions Judge on February 27, 1991.
  • District and Sessions Judge, On March 1, 1996.
  • The presiding officer in the Labour Court.
  • Member of the Balochistan Services Tribunal on Oct 22, 1998.
  • Chairperson of the Balochistan Services Tribunal on July 10, 2009.
  • Additional Judge of the high court on Sept 7, 2009.
  • Balochistan High Court appointed her a regular judge on May 11, 2011.
  • Justice Syeda Tahira Safdar is a Member of the Administration Committee.
  • Member of Committee for drafting rules, regulations, notifications, circulars, and to examine the rules and their particulars.
  • One of the three judges of Special Court that conducted the trial for high treason against Gen. Pervez Musharraf on November 20, 2013.
