Here’s How the Teams Have Performed in PSL 2019 So Far [Analysis]

The fun-filled UAE leg of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2019 is over and the teams will now take-off for Karachi. Over the past few weeks, we have seen some brilliant performances, with the bat, ball and in the field.

The National Stadium Karachi will be buzzing as the action gets back to Pakistan, starting with Lahore Qalandars vs Islamabad United clash on 9 March.

Let’s have a look at how each team has performed this season. The teams are in the same order as their current standings.

1) Quetta Gladiators

Quetta Gladiators are sitting pretty at the top of the table with 14 points. The team has won 7 out of 9 matches and it has looked the most compact team this year.

Here’s Quetta’s journey so far.

Opposition Match Result Man of the Match
Peshawar Zalmi 3 Quetta Gladiators won by 6 wickets Umar Akmal
Islamabad United 6 Quetta Gladiators won by 7 wickets Shane Watson
Multan Sultans 8 Quetta Gladiators won by 8 wickets Shane Watson
Lahore Qalandars 12 Quetta Gladiators won by 3 wickets Sarfaraz Ahmed
Karachi Kings 15 Karachi Kings won by 6 wickets Colin Ingram (KK)
Lahore Qalandars 17 Lahore Qalandars won by 8 wickets S Lamichhane (LQ)
Multan Sultans 22 Quetta Gladiators won by 6 wickets DJ Bravo
Peshawar Zalmi 23 Quetta Gladiators won by 8 wickets Shane Watson
Islamabad United 26 Quetta Gladiators won by 43 runs Ahmad Shahzad

Looking at the above table, two things stand out; Shane Watson and successful chases.

Out of the seven matches, Quetta won 6 when batting second and one after setting the target. The two occasions that saw Quetta lose were also won by the chasing team.

The veteran Australian all-rounder, Shane Watson has won the man of the match award three times. Amid confusions over his willingness to play in Pakistan, the cricketer has announced to visit Pakistan. He will be visiting the country after 14 years.

Standout Performers

There is no doubt that Shane Watson is the most valuable player for Quetta Gladiators. The Aussie leads the batting charts with 332 runs from 9 innings at an average of 47.42. He has hit the most number of sixes (15) for Quetta Gladiators this season.

With Ahmad Shahzad in form and Rilee Rossouw (235) and Umar Akmal (228) in the top 10 run getters, Quetta has a solid top order, having the ability to dismantle any bowling attack.

Sohail Tanvir (14), Mohammad Nawaz (10) and Fawad Ahmed (9) are the top bowlers for Quetta Gladiators. The rising star, Mohammad Hasnain has shown glimpses of pure brilliance and his raw pace is another positive for Quetta Gladiators.

2 Peshawar Zalmi

Peshawar Zalmi has also qualified for the playoffs and will be looking to secure a place in the top 2.

Another win would get them a spot in the qualifier, meaning that they can directly qualify for the PSL final if they win the qualifier against Quetta Gladiators.

Here are the team’s results so far.

Opposition Match Result Man of the Match
Quetta Gladiators 3 Quetta Gladiators won by 6 wickets Umar Akmal (QG)
Lahore Qalandars 7 Peshawar Zalmi won by 7 wickets Hasan Ali
Karachi Kings 9 Peshawar Zalmi won by 44 runs Imam-ul-Haq
Islamabad United 11 Islamabad United won by 12 runs Mohammad Sami (IU)
Multan Sultans 14 Peshawar Zalmi won by 5 wickets Hasan Ali
Multan Sultans 19 Peshawar Zalmi won by 7 wickets Kieron Pollard
Islamabad United 21 Peshawar Zalmi won by 4 wickets Liam Dawson
Quetta Gladiators 23 Quetta Gladiators won by 8 wickets Shane Watson (QG)
Lahore Qalandars 25 Peshawar Zalmi won by 5 wickets Misbah-ul-Haq

The best thing about Peshawar Zalmi is their team effort considering they have had different match-winners on different days. Hasan Ali has won the man of the match award twice and he is the leading wicket taker with 18 wickets, the joint most wickets in any PSL season.

Peshawar Zalmi has won 5 times while chasing, while the only time they won batting first was against Karachi Kings. Looks like results in UAE have a lot to do with the toss.

Standout Performers

Imam-ul-Haq is the leading run-scorer for Peshawar Zalmi with 198 runs from 8 innings, while Kieron Pollard (184), Liam Dawson (155), Kamran Akmal (154), Umar Amin (151) and Darren Sammy (129) have all chipped in with the bat.

Peshawar has one of the most lethal bowling attacks with Hasan Ali (18) and Wahab Riaz (11) leading the charts.

The emerging picks, Sameen Gul, and Ibtesam Sheikh have also performed well, especially Sameen Gul who looks a much-improved bowler from when he first emerged on the scene.

3 Islamabad United

Standing at third with 8 points, Islamabad United faces a tricky situation. Mohammad Sami-led side can be knocked out of the tournament if they lose their match against Lahore Qalandars. However, the team can still qualify for the playoffs in certain scenarios involving Karachi Kings and Lahore Qalandars.

Here’s how Islamabad’s campaign unfolded this season.

Opposition Match Result Man of the Match
Lahore Qalandars 1 Islamabad United won by 5 wickets Faheem Ashraf
Multan Sultans 4 Multan Sultans won by 5 wickets Ali Shafiq (MS)
Quetta Gladiators 6 Quetta Gladiators won by 7 wickets Shane Watson (QG)
Peshawar Zalmi 11 Islamabad United won by 12 runs Mohammad Sami
Karachi Kings 13 Islamabad United won by 7 wickets Luke Ronchi
Multan Sultans 16 Multan Sultans won by 5 wickets Daniel Christian (MS)
Karachi Kings 18 Islamabad United won by 5 wickets Asif Ali
Peshawar Zalmi 21 Peshawar Zalmi won by 4 wickets Liam Dawson (PZ)
Quetta Gladiators 26 Quetta Gladiators won by 43 runs Ahmad Shahzad (QG)

Islamabad United has had a relatively bad season, winning 4 out of the 9 games played so far.

Standout Performers

Luke Ronchi has been the top batsman for the men in red as he is the second highest run-scorer with 298 runs. Asif Ali comes second with 202 runs. Other batsmen have failed to make their mark which is one of the main reasons why Islamabad is yet to secure a playoffs berth.

Faheem Ashraf has 13 scalps in 9 innings with a best of 4/18. The team relies heavily on its all-rounders including Samit Patel, Shadab Khan, and Faheem Ashraf.

Mohammad Musa, the emerging pacer, has been praised by the cricket experts. Rizwan Hussain also started impressively, however, he wasn’t given enough games to prove his mettle.

4 Karachi Kings

Karachi Kings has had a similar season as last year, however, they would want to do better in the last two games. The team still has a good chance of ending up second or third with 12 points, provided they win the remaining fixtures.

Opposition Match Result Man of the Match
Multan Sultans 2 Karachi Kings won by 8 runs Liam Livingstone
Lahore Qalandars 5 Lahore Qalandars won by 22 runs Haris Rauf (LQ)
Peshawar Zalmi 9 Peshawar Zalmi won by 44 runs Imam-ul-Haq (PZ)
Islamabad United 13 Islamabad United won by 7 wickets Luke Ronchi (IU)
Quetta Gladiators 15 Karachi Kings won by 6 wickets Colin Ingram
Islamabad United 18 Islamabad United won by 5 wickets Asif Ali (IU)
Lahore Qalandars 20 Karachi Kings won by 5 wickets Iftikhar Ahmed
Multan Sultans 24 Karachi Kings won by 5 wickets Liam Livingstone

Out of the 4 wins, Karachi won 3 matches while chasing and 1 while batting first.

With a strong top order, including the number 1 and 2 ranked T20I batsmen, Babar Azam and Colin Munro respectively, Liam Livingstone, who has won two Man of the Match awards, and Colin Ingram, Karachi Kings can topple any team on any given day.

Standout Performers

While we would have wanted Babar Azam to lead the batting charts for Karachi, it is Liam Livingstone, who has scored 280 runs at an impressive average of 40. He is the third-highest run-getter this season until now.

Colin Ingram (226) and Babar Azam (224) are also among the top batsmen and Karachi’s first 4 batsmen present a dangerous picture for the opposition. While Colin Munro is yet to get going with his form, he can win games single-handedly.

The young left-arm spinner, Umer Khan has impressed everyone with his guile and ability to take big wickets. He has already dismissed AB de Villiers, Luke Ronchi, Shane Watson, James Vince, Shoaib Malik and Corey Anderson to name a few. He is the leading wicket-taker for Karachi with 10 scalps.

5 Lahore Qalandars

Another year, another disappointing campaign for Lahore Qalandars as they have won only 3 matches out of 8.

Hoping for a better return this time around, Lahore Qalandars would want to win the last two matches to boost their chances of qualification.

Opposition Match Result Man of the Match
Islamabad United 1 Islamabad United won by 5 wickets Faheem Ashraf (IU)
Karachi Kings 5 Lahore Qalandars won by 22 runs Haris Rauf
Peshawar Zalmi 7 Peshawar Zalmi won by 7 wickets Hasan Ali (PZ)
Multan Sultans 10 Lahore Qalandars won by 6 wickets AB de Villiers
Quetta Gladiators 12 Quetta Gladiators won by 3 wickets Sarfaraz Ahmed (QG)
Quetta Gladiators 17 Lahore Qalandars won by 8 wickets S Lamichhane
Karachi Kings 20 Karachi Kings won by 5 wickets Iftikhar Ahmed (KK)
Peshawar Zalmi 25 Peshawar Zalmi won by 5 wickets Misbah-ul-Haq (PZ)

The table paints a gloomy picture for the Lahore Qalandar fans who were hoping for a better performance from the likes of Mohammad Hafeez and AB de Villiers. Unfortunately, both the players have now been ruled out and it is up to Fakhar Zaman to guide his team into the top 4.

Standout Performers

Fakhar Zaman has 194 runs from 8 innings whereas Sohail Akhter has scored 164 runs in 7 innings. AB de Villiers, who will not be playing the remainder of matches due to an injury, is on the top with 218 runs with an average of 54.50.

Haris Rauf has been a top find for Lahore Qalandars as he is 4th in the list of top wicket-takers with 11 wickets in 8 matches. Sandeep Lamichaane has also been a brilliant signing for Qalandars as he has proved himself in leading franchise-based leagues. Both Sandeep and Rahat Ali have 10 wickets each. Shaheen Shah Afridi has bagged 8 wickets in 6 innings.

6 Multan Sultans

Despite having a good bunch of players – a mixture of youth and experience, Multan Sultans has had a dismal tournament yet again. The team’s bowling attack was lauded as the best bowling unit in the league, however, it hasn’t been able to meet the expectations.

Opposition Match Result Man of the Match
Karachi Kings 2 Karachi Kings won by 8 runs Liam Livingstone (KK)
Islamabad United 4 Multan Sultans won by 5 wickets Ali Shafiq
Quetta Gladiators 8 Quetta Gladiators won by 8 wickets Shane Watson (QG)
Lahore Qalandars 10 Lahore Qalandars won by 6 wickets AB de Villiers (LQ)
Peshawar Zalmi 14 Peshawar Zalmi won by 4 wickets Hasan Ali (PZ)
Islamabad United 16 Multan Sultans won by 5 wickets Daniel Christian
Peshawar Zalmi 19 Peshawar Zalmi won by 7 wickets Kieron Pollard (PZ)
Quetta Gladiators 22 Quetta Gladiators won by 6 wickets DJ Bravo (QG)
Karachi Kings 24 Karachi Kings won by 5 wickets Liam Livingstone (KK)

Multan Sultans has managed just 2 wins out of 9 matches, meaning that it has been knocked out of the league. The team still has one match to go and Multan fans would be hoping for a consolation win.

Shoaib Malik’s captaincy has raised some eyebrows as his decision-making was questioned a number of times during the league. Some back luck combined with poor captaincy meant that Sultans once again finished last.

Standout Performers

Shoaib Malik has enjoyed a good season with the bat, scoring 266 runs at 44.33. English batsman, James Vince has also been among the top batsmen with 206 runs from 7 innings.

Umar Siddiq has been the find of the tournament for Multan Sultans and he has the talent to go on and represent Pakistan at the international level. The teenage pacer, Mohammad Ilyas has also impressed during the league, picking up 8 wickets in 6 innings. Shahid Afridi and Junaid Khan have also picked 8 wickets each while Mohammad Irfan has been among the most economical bowlers this season.
