Apple Finally Brings Triple Cameras & Fast Charging to iPhone 11 Pro Duo

Apple, at a press event in Cupertino, California unveiled the 2019 iPhone lineup with its first ‘Pro’ phones that are being touted, as always, as the “most powerful iPhones ever” as they feature Apple’s newly-debuted A13 Bionic CPU. The new iPhones also offer a matte stainless-steel form and are the first-ever iPhones to sport a triple sensor camera array.

In the words of Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing,

iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max are the most powerful and advanced smartphones we have ever made. They are packed with sophisticated technology that pros can count on to get their work done, and for anyone who wants the very best device made, even if they are not a pro.

Design and Display

The iPhone 11 Pro duo features the all-new ‘Pro-grade’ or specifically, surgical-grade stainless steel chassis with a matte glass back. Along with the usual Space Gray, Silver and a new Gold colors, we will see a Midnight-Green color iPhone joining the lot.

The huge triple sensor camera bump on the back, which no doubt provides amazing imaging capabilities, also means the users will have to put up with a bulge on the back of the phone. Apple has also announced brand new protective cases for the duo.

The chassis comes with an IP68 rating which means it is water-resistant up to 4 meters for at least 30 minutes.

Moving on to the display, both smartphones sport the new Super Retina XDR display, Apple’s custom design OLED with a very impressive 1200 nits peak brightness, wide color gamut, 2 million-to-one contrast ratio, HDR10, and Dolby Vision support. On top of all these features, Apple claims that the display is 15% more energy-efficient as well.

The iPhone 11 Pro comes with a 5.8-inch display, while the iPhone 11 Pro Max features a huge 6.5-inch display.

Internal and Storage

These pro-branded models feature the newly announced Apple A13 Bionic chipset dubbed the ‘the fastest chip ever in a smartphone’. The chipset has 8.5 billion transistors built on a 7nm process. As compared to A12, its CPU cores are 20% faster on top of being 30% more energy efficient. Similarly, the GPU is 20% faster and 40% more efficient.

The neural engine in charge of the image processing has 8 cores and is claimed to be 15% more efficient and 20% faster.

Apple being Apple, does not reveal the exact figures when it comes to the specifications, hence, the percentages.

As far as the memory options are concerned, as usual, the base storage is 64 GB. Which is a disappointment considering the price tag.

Cameras

The triple sensor setup on the rear is by far the most talked-about feature of the duo. Both the smartphones feature a Pixel 4-esque square camera hump, as teased by Google, with three 12 MP sensors. The main sensor sits behind a 26mm f/1.8 lens, has Dual Pixel Auto Focus and optical image stabilization (OIS). The secondary lens is a telephoto lens offering 2x optical zoom, Dual Pixel Auto Focus and OIS.

Last but not least is a much anticipated ultra-wide-angle camera featuring a 120 degrees field of view. All the image sensors are in sync, hence when the user switches between them, the focus, exposure, mapping, etc the settings remain the same.

The selfie camera is a 12 MP lone shooter with a wider field of view, and Smart HDR for natural-looking images. The front camera is also able to record slow-motion videos, and Apple calls it the “Slowfie”.

Using the Filmic application, users can shoot with all the four cameras at the same time, i.e. triple sensor rear camera and the selfie camera, all at once. However, if you want to use the app, you must opt for the 256 GB or 512 GB memory variant.

Apple’s Deep fusion mode, which will be released later with a software update, is their version of HDR+. When it is activated, the camera captures a total of 9 images, 4 photos before the shutter is pressed, 4 when the shutter is pressed and then 1 long exposure image. The best shots are then fused. The camera sensors finally feature a dedicated night mode.

All the camera sensors are capable of shooting 4K videos at 60fps without compromising the colors.

Battery and Pricing

The iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max sport a larger battery as compared to the vanilla iPhone 11. They feature 18W fast charging, which is another first since none of the previous iPhones came with fast charging.

Again, as Apple is mute about the exact battery capacity, all we can say is that the iPhone 11 Pro has a battery life 4 hours longer than the XS, while the iPhone 11 Pro Max has a battery life 5 hours longer than the XS.

As far as the pricing is concerned, the basic variant of the iPhone 11 Pro will cost $999 and the basic variant of the iPhone 11 Pro Max will cost $1099. Both smartphones will go on sale on 20th September 2019 and will be available for pre-orders by the 13th.
