Ruet-e-Hilal Committee and Ministry of Science At Odds Again Over Moonsighting

The two federal ministries – Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Ministry of Science and Technology – have locked heads once again over the start of upcoming Hijri month.

The conflict has been stirring up every month since the launch of the scientific lunar calendar by the ministry in May this year. Before that, the central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee was solely responsible for deciding the beginning of Hijri months based on the sighting of the moon.

Though the lunar calendar successfully predicted Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha, it allegedly failed to suggest the beginning of Zil Qaad and now Safar.

According to the calendar, the month of Safar should start from September 30 (Monday), but the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee argues that the moon was not sighted on Sunday and the Hijri month will commence from October 1 (Tuesday).

The website pakmoonsighting.pk – a project of the Ministry of Science and Technology – suggests it should be first Safar today, but the committee disagrees.

“No evidence of moon sighting was received from any part of the country on Sunday,” the central moon-sighting committee said.

This is not the first time that the two entities have come at loggerheads.

Earlier in May, the Federal Minister received a bashing from the chairman of the committee Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman for calling to reduce the role of religious scholars in moon-sighting.

He urged Prime Minister Khan to rein in his ministers after Fawad blamed clerics of making moon sighting controversial.

  • zani imran, zani zardari, zani nawaz, all these doggis and their jahil supporters are looting country.

  • dont worry, we have same thing in UK and we sick of it too. Moon sighting is sufficient in Pakistan as you will see the moon which is not possible in UK.
