Pakistani Named in Fortune’s Most Influential Under 40 List for 2019

Pakistan’s Omer Ismail has been named in Fortune’s Most Influential Under 40 List for 2019. Omer, a 39-year-old, is the only person of Pakistani origin to make the list and was recognized for his work in the finance industry.

At present, Omer is working as a partner at Goldman Sachs, one of the biggest investment banks in the world, where he watches over the entire US consumer business. Omer, who hails from Karachi, did his undergraduate from Dartmouth and then an MBA from Harvard Business School.

This was just a stepping stone as he worked his way up the ladder to Managing Director in Goldman Sachs’ private equity investment team. With each step, his importance increased to such heights that when Goldman Sachs’ thought of setting up a new venture into the consumer banking space in 2014, he was chosen to lead a strategy team studying the possibility.

Afterwards, when the division became a reality, he was its first employee and chief operating officer, charged with leading the bank’s entry into an entirely new business segment. Currently, a partner there, he is in charge of the personal banking arm, Marcus by Goldman Sachs, with more than 4 million customers.

Furthermore, he oversees the Apple Card, the firm’s partnership with the Silicon Valley behemoth that promises to transform consumer finance paradigms.

This isn’t the first recognition of his brilliance; he was listed as one of Business Insider’s 100 People Transforming Business, Crain’s 40 under 40 and Bank Innovation’s Innovators to Watch. Omer lives in New York with his wife and two kids.
