KP to Limit the Weight of School Bags for Children

The Education Department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa KPK has submitted the KPK School Bags Act 2019 in the provincial cabinet.

As per the reports, the bill suggests a reduction in the weight of school bags for children. The bill has proposed that the weight of a schoolbag should be 15% of the weight of the student.

Justice Qaiser Rasheed of Peshawar High Court initially suggested a reduction in the weight of schoolbags.

If the KPK School Bags Act 2019 is signed into law, it will be extended to all government and private education institutions in the province.

The Education Department of KPK will not recognize any educational institution that violates this act. Moreover, the registration of the educational institution will also be revoked.

As per Section 7 of the bill:

In the case of violation, principals and other faculty of the schools will be taken to task. If private schools disarm the law, they will be fined Rs. 200,000 each.

According to Section 4(1) of the bill:

Schools are bound to provide lockers and cupboards for students up to 10th grade. This will help give space to students inside centers of learning where they can keep their books and other extra-curricular belongings.

The educational institutions will frequently organize awareness campaigns regarding the consequences of excessively heavy schoolbags. In the future, textbooks and notebooks will be made from lighter materials as well.

KP government will set up an independent monitoring cell to ensure compliance with the law.
