Day 2: Australian Batsmen Take Advantage of Pakistan’s Poor Bowling Display

After being all out for 240, Pakistan needed a boost heading into the second day of the first Test match against Australia.

However, things did not go according to plan as David Warner and Joe Burns have both been in excellent form and continued that run against Pakistan on day 2.

Abysmal Display from Pakistan

After a poor batting display, Pakistan did not help its reputation when it came to the bowling department either. The only positive came when Naseem Shah took charge and bowled with real hunger.

  • Unfortunate No Ball

David Warner was batting on 56 when he went and chased a wide delivery from Naseem Shah. Warner eventually ended up edging the ball and it seemed as if Naseem had finally gotten his first wicket in Test match cricket. Unfortunately for him and Pakistan, the replay showed that Naseem had stepped ahead of the line and the delivery was eventually called a no-ball.

  • Lack of Planning

Throughout the Ashes series, Stuart Broad made it abundantly clear that David Warner dislikes facing quickies from over the wicket. England kept attacking Warner’s chink in the armor and found great success against him. Despite this, Pakistan did not try the same method against the left-handed batsman, who eventually took the game away from them. No bowler had any plan and it is more a reflection on the management and the captain than on the bowlers.

  • Half Chances not Taken

When facing a quality opposition such as Australia, it is important to take the half chances. Pakistan’s fielding, which is questionable as it is, missed out on a number of opportunities. Shan Masood, fielding at short-leg, stopped Joe Burns flick on the leg-side and then failed to run him out when he was out of the crease. Another opportunity was presented to Yasir Shah when David Warner called for a quick single but he failed to run Joe Burns out. Later in the day, Asad Shafiq dropped a catch in the slip to allow Marnus Labuschagne to continue his innings.

As Things Stand

Australia managed a 222-runs opening partnership stand, which was eventually broken by Yasir Shah. David Warner remains not-out on 151 runs and is supported at the crease by Marnus Labuschagne who is 55 not-out.

The Aussies lead by 72 runs with 9 wickets at their disposal. The total score read 312-1 at the end of day 2.
