Samsung is now officially a part of the Unified Push Alliance in China alongside major Chinese OEMs.
The Chinese Unified Push Alliance has confirmed that Samsung’s application for entry conforms with the alliance’s standards. The Korean tech giant’s push notification service meets the technical requirements for the latest version of the alliance’s standards “T-UPA0002-2019 unified push interface layer specification.”
As a consequence, push notifications will soon be available on Samsung smartphones and major Chinese brands including Huawei, Honor, OnePlus, Oppo, Realme, and ZTE.
What is the Unified Push Alliance?
For context, the Unified Push Alliance is a group formed by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in an attempt to harmonize push notifications in android smartphones.
This is because Chinese OEMs use their own notification system instead of using Google’s push notifications service. This requires apps to wake up each time a new notification is received, which adversely affects the device’s performance and battery life.
With the push notification service, apps will be able to send notifications without having to wake up each time, which will translate into better battery life, less memory consumption, and better phone performance overall.
Other than the companies mentioned earlier, the alliance has 74 other members including Xiaomi, Alibaba, JD, Qihoo 360, etc.
Huawei and Honor have already introduced push notifications in EMUI 10, while Oppo promises to introduce the feature in Color OS 3 that is set to launch December 31st.
