PIA Cuts Employees’ Salaries By Up to 25 Percent

Pakistan International Airlines has slashed the salaries of its employees by up to 25 percent in the wake of financial losses due to the coronavirus lockdown.

PIA spokesperson, Abdullah Hafeez Khan, said in a statement that the national flag carrier is not left with enough money to pay full salaries to its staffers. As a result, it has decided to nominally reduce PIA top brass’ pays.

Employees getting salaries Rs. 100,000 or above will bear a 10 percent cut to their monthly salaries. Similarly, officers receiving Rs. 300,000 or above will face a maximum of 25 percent decrease in their monthly income.

However, there will be no pay cut for employees of grades 1 – 4, according to the spokesperson.

He said that many top officials of the national airline volunteered for a cut in their salaries starting with the Chief Operating Officer, Air Marshal Arshad Malik, and others followed.

Those who volunteered for a reduction in salary include Chief Officers of Departments who announced a 20 percent cut in salaries, General Manager announced a 10 percent pay cut and Deputy General Managers and Managers announced a 10 and eight percent salary cut.

As per reports, PIA’s losses due to the coronavirus pandemic and the countrywide lockdown surmount Rs. 10 billion. The national airliner accumulated Rs. 4 billion losses in March alone.
