Gautam Gambhir Questions Virat Kohli’s Abilities

Virat Kohli is a run-machine across formats and is one of the most prolific batsmen of the modern era. Former Indian batsman, Gautam Gambhir, has, however, questioned Virat’s leadership abilities, saying that he can score as many runs as he wants but it will only matter if he wins a trophy for India.

Kohli at the moment has won nothing, to be honest as a leader.

The cricketer-turned-politician gave the examples of West Indian great, Brian Lara, and one of the greatest all-rounders, South Africa’s Jacques Kallis, saying that they have won nothing for their teams. This is quite a big statement considering he has questioned two all-time greats of the game.

Talking about the Indian captain, Gambhir said that he has a lot to prove.

He has lots to achieve! It is a team sport. You can keep scoring your own runs. There are people like Brian Lara who have scored so many runs. There are people like Jacques Kallis who have won nothing.

Kohli, however, was a part of the Indian team that won the 2011 World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy. Gambhir also pointed out that a career is fulfilled only if you win big ICC trophies for your team.

You can keep scoring those big runs but according to me, till you win those big trophies you will never be able to fulfill your entire career.

India usually makes it to the knockouts including semi-finals and the finals, however, they haven’t been able to win a big tournament after 2013. Virat Kohli currently has 7,240 runs in Tests at 53.62 and 11,867 at 59.33 in ODIs. He also averages above 50 in the shortest format.
