Islamabad Court Issues Notice to US President Trump

A local court in Islamabad has issued a notice to the President of the United States, Donald Trump, among other parties, seeking damages from the government for ‘negligence’ in curbing the spread of the coronavirus.

A citizen named Shah Sarwar has filed a petition, contending that his father Omar Khattab, the sole breadwinner of the house, died of the coronavirus.

The petitioner has named Secretary of National Health Services, Chairman NDMA, Country Head of the World Health Organization, and the US President Donald Trump as parties in his petition. He has sought Rs. 49 million in damages from the government.

Civil Judge, Haider Ali Shah’s court has accepted the plea for hearing and has issued notices to all parties, including the federal government and sought reply.

Sarwar’s counsel, Arif Gigiani, spoke to media, saying that the first hearing of the case was held on Wednesday in which the court declared that the petition was admissible. He mentioned that the notice for President Trump will be served to the US Embassy in Islamabad.

When asked why the US President was made a party to the case, the counsel replied:

The United States is the largest donor to health care, so it was the United States’ job to control the virus promptly through the World Health Organization.

To a question on why China was not made a party where the virus originated from, the counsel said that China did its best to contain the virus with a lockdown in Wuhan. He argued that China had fulfilled its responsibility by informing the World Health Organization (WHO).

Gigiani maintained that when the virus reached Pakistan, the incumbent government failed to control it. As a result, the petitioner’s father got infected while on duty but was not tested at any government hospital. He had to pay Rs. 10,000 for a test at a private laboratory that confirmed the infection. Unfortunately, he later died from the coronavirus compilations.

According to the petition, they spent all their savings on the treatment of his father and did not receive any cooperation from the government. He was even denied treatment at government hospitals.
