A viral video of a Pakistani, languishing in a Saudi jail, seeking the Chief Justice of Pakistan to take notice of his plight has finally grabbed the attention of the top adjudicator of the country.
The top judge on Wednesday ordered the Foreign Office to submit a reply in the court about the Pakistani.
A Pakistani citizen, Zaheer Nawaz, incarcerated in a Saudi prison, through a video uploaded on social media, has appealed to the CJP to take notice of his incarceration in the Kingdom’s prison and issue instructions to the concerned authorities to make arrangements for his release from the jail.
Zaheer Nawaz’s father has also moved an application in the Human Right Cell of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. In his application, the inmate’s father stated that his son Zaheer Nawaz was imprisoned in a Saudi jail for the last five months. He said that his son was being punished for the faults of his Saudi Kafeel (sponsor/guarantor). According to him, despite receiving fee the Kafeel did not renew his Iqama (work permit).
The Saudi authorities put him behind the bars for non-renewal of the Iqama, he added.
On Wednesday, Chief Justice of Pakistan took suo motu notice of Zaheer’s imprisonment.
The court ordered the Foreign Ministry to file comments on the issue within 15 days apprising the court what the Foreign Office was doing for the release of the Pakistani citizen.
According to a report earlier this year, some 9,000 Pakistanis are languishing in jails of different countries for various crimes. Saudi Arabia is detaining the highest number of 2,795 Pakistanis out of the total 9,000 languishing in jails of foreign countries.
