The China University of Petroleum is a national public university located in Beijing, China. The Ministry of Education sponsors and oversees the university. It is part of Project 211 and the Double First-Class Construction initiative.

The university was founded in 1953 under the name Beijing Petroleum Institute. It currently comprises four faculties, five departments, three schools, and one research center. The university offers 25 bachelor’s programs, 99 master’s programs, and 32 PhD programs. It also provides one diploma program in Chinese Language Studies. The QS World University Rankings 2026 have placed the university at #686.
