Aix-Marseille University (AMU; French: Aix-Marseille Université; formally Université d’Aix-Marseille) is a public research university in the Provence region of southern France. It stands as one of the oldest universities in the Francophone world. Louis II of Anjou, Count of Provence, founded the university in 1409. He petitioned the Pisan Antipope Alexander V to establish the University of Provence.
Today, about 80,000 students study at AMU, including more than 10,000 international students from around the world. The university offers around 600 degree programs across many fields such as arts, sciences, law, economics, health, and technology. It has multiple faculties and research units that support both general and professional education. The QS World University Rankings 2026 have placed the university at #428.
