The University of Glasgow African Excellence Award is a prestigious scholarship offered to support outstanding students from African countries. The university provides this award to students who wish to pursue a one-year postgraduate taught Master’s program starting in September 2026. Through this initiative, the University of Glasgow actively invests in future African leaders who seek to create positive change in their communities.

Background and Purpose

The University of Glasgow established the African Excellence Award to promote academic excellence and global leadership. The scholarship empowers talented students by giving them access to advanced education in the UK. At the same time, the award encourages scholars to apply their knowledge and skills to social, economic, and professional development in their home countries. By supporting African students, the university strengthens its commitment to global engagement and inclusive education.

African Excellence Award Benefits

The award provides a full waiver of tuition fees for the entire duration of the one-year Master’s program. This support significantly reduces the financial burden of international study. As a result, scholars can focus fully on academic growth, research, and professional development. The scholarship applies to a wide range of postgraduate taught programs offered at the University of Glasgow.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must be domiciled in an eligible African country and classified as international fee status students. They must meet high academic standards, equivalent to a UK First Class Honors degree. In addition, candidates must present a clear career or development plan that explains how their Master’s degree will help them make a meaningful impact. Applicants must also meet UK Visa and Immigration (UKVI) financial requirements for living costs.

African Excellence Award Application Process

Applicants can apply for the scholarship before receiving an offer of admission. However, they must hold or receive an offer for a qualifying program before they can be considered for an interview and the award. The application deadline is 31 March 2026. The university expects to send interview notifications by 8 May 2026. For the 2026/27 academic year, the university will grant up to 16 awards.

Opportunities for Scholars

Recipients join a diverse academic community at one of the UK’s leading universities. They gain advanced knowledge across a wide range of disciplines and develop leadership skills for long-term impact. Moreover, scholars benefit from global networking opportunities and exposure to high-quality research and teaching. Through this award, the University of Glasgow supports future leaders who will drive positive change across Africa and beyond.
