The Wageningen University NL Scholarship is a financial award funded by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science in collaboration with Dutch research universities and universities of applied sciences. Wageningen University & Research (WUR) also participates in this program. The scholarship supports outstanding international students from selected non-EEA countries who wish to pursue a full-time Master of Science (MSc) degree in the Netherlands. Through this initiative, the Netherlands attracts high-achieving global talent and promotes international academic exchange.
Background and Purpose
The Dutch government established the NL Scholarship to make higher education in the Netherlands more accessible to international students. The program focuses on academic excellence and global diversity. Therefore, it targets students who show strong academic performance and motivation. By supporting international talent, the scholarship strengthens the global reputation of Dutch universities. At the same time, it builds long-term academic and professional links between the Netherlands and students’ home countries.
Scholarship Benefits
The NL Scholarship provides a one-time financial award during the first year of study. The standard award amount is €5,000. However, the selection committee may grant higher awards of €10,000 or €15,000 based on merit. The scholarship amount is usually deducted directly from the student’s tuition invoice. As a result, it reduces the financial burden of studying in the Netherlands. Although it does not cover full tuition, it offers meaningful support at the start of the program.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must be citizens of selected non-EEA countries. They must hold strong academic records, usually with a GPA of at least 80%. In addition, students must have (un-)conditional admission to a WUR MSc program that begins in September. Applicants with dual EU/EEA nationality or previous study experience in the Netherlands are generally not eligible. These requirements ensure that the scholarship supports new and high-performing international students.
Scholarship Application Process
Eligible students usually receive an automatic invitation to apply after securing admission. WUR sends these invitations starting in February each year. Applicants must then submit the required documents by early May. The selection process is competitive and merit-based. Final scholarship decisions are normally communicated by mid-June.
Opportunities for Scholars
NL Scholarship recipients gain more than financial assistance. They receive recognition for academic excellence and join a global academic community. Moreover, the award strengthens their academic profiles and supports a smooth transition into graduate studies in the Netherlands.
