The University of Melbourne RTP Scholarship supports high-achieving domestic and international students pursuing graduate research degrees. The scholarship applies to both Master’s by Research and Doctoral (PhD) programs. Funded jointly by the Australian Commonwealth Government and the University of Melbourne, the RTP Scholarship provides financial assistance that allows scholars to focus fully on their research. It remains highly competitive and targets students with strong academic performance and research potential.
Background and Purpose
The RTP Scholarship aims to develop global research leaders and innovators. The program supports students who seek to advance knowledge and contribute to cutting-edge research. By covering tuition and providing a living stipend, the scholarship reduces financial barriers and enables scholars to pursue ambitious research projects. Furthermore, it reinforces the University of Melbourne’s commitment to academic excellence and global research impact.
University of Melbourne RTP Scholarship Benefits
Recipients receive full tuition fee remission for the standard duration of their degree—up to two years for Master’s by Research and up to four years for PhD students. In addition, they may receive a living allowance (stipend) at a standard rate, indexed annually, such as AUD 39,500 per year (2026 full-time rate). The stipend is paid fortnightly and may include limited paid sick, parental, and partner leave. The scholarship also provides a one-off relocation grant: AUD 2,000 for students moving within Australia and AUD 3,000 for students relocating from overseas. International students requiring a visa receive Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) Single Membership.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must apply for admission to a graduate research degree and meet the University of Melbourne’s entry requirements. Both domestic and international students are eligible. Selection for the stipend component is merit-based, considering academic achievement and research potential. Applicants already admitted automatically qualify for the scholarship.
University of Melbourne RTP Scholarship Application Process
Most applicants do not need to submit a separate scholarship application. The university reviews admission applications and determines eligibility for the RTP Scholarship simultaneously. Successful candidates are notified through the University’s scholarship portal, generally at the same time as their course offer.
Opportunities for Scholars
Recipients gain access to world-class research facilities, expert supervision, and interdisciplinary collaborations. They also participate in professional development programs and networking opportunities. As a result, scholars strengthen their research skills, broaden their global perspectives, and prepare for leadership roles in academia, industry, and society.
