The CAMHRA Master’s Scholarships support outstanding postgraduate students at SOAS University of London for the academic year 2026/27. The Centre for Anthropology and Mental Health Research in Action (CAMHRA) offers these scholarships to applicants who wish to pursue advanced study in anthropology and mental health. The program targets students who demonstrate strong academic ability and a clear commitment to ethnographic research. Moreover, it supports individuals who face financial, social, or personal barriers to postgraduate education.

Background and Purpose

CAMHRA established this scholarship to strengthen research at the intersection of anthropology and mental health. The center promotes cross-cultural, social, and medical anthropology approaches to mental health research. Therefore, it selects students who show passion for ethnographic inquiry and interdisciplinary thinking. Through this initiative, CAMHRA invests in future researchers who will address global mental health challenges. In addition, the scholarship encourages applicants with lived experience or professional engagement in mental health contexts.

CAMHRA Master’s Scholarships Benefits

The standard scholarship covers full tuition fees for the duration of the master’s program. Students may study for one year full-time or two years part-time. However, the award does not usually provide a living stipend. In addition, CAMHRA offers one exceptional scholarship that includes a living stipend aligned with UKRI studentships, currently £22,780 including London weighting. For 2026/27, this enhanced award supports applicants from Afghanistan, Iran, or Iraq who face exceptional circumstances.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must first apply to an eligible program. These include the MA in Medical Anthropology and Mental Health and the MRes in Social Anthropology. Candidates must demonstrate academic excellence and submit a strong research proposal focused on mental health anthropology. Furthermore, they must present a compelling personal statement that outlines motivation and potential impact. The selection committee evaluates merit, research quality, and commitment to the field. Shortlisted candidates may attend an interview.

CAMHRA Master’s Scholarships  Application Process

Applicants must complete two steps. First, they must apply for admission to their chosen master’s program. Then, they must submit a separate scholarship application through the SOAS admissions portal before the deadline. Importantly, applicants do not need to hold an offer of admission by the scholarship deadline.

Opportunities for Scholars

This scholarship allows students to engage in rigorous ethnographic research and interdisciplinary study. Scholars join a vibrant academic community and contribute to meaningful debates on global mental health. Consequently, they build strong research careers and expand their professional impact in anthropology and mental health fields.
