The Doctoral Scholarships for Candidates from the Global South are intended for students who have completed their Master’s degree and wish to start their PhD. To a limited extent, PhD students are allowed to have already completed preliminary research. The first research stay at Ghent University needs to start between 1 October 2026 and 28 February 2027. Who can apply for this scholarship?
Candidates must be nationals of one of the eligible Global South countries and must intend to complete a full (joint) PhD degree at Ghent University.
Can exchange students apply?
No. Only full‐degree PhD students aiming for a (joint) PhD at Ghent University can apply.
Are there restrictions on research fields?
No, all research fields are accepted. However, preference is given to proposals with strong North–South relevance, meaning the research benefits both regions and aligns with global and development priorities.
What are the requirements for supervisors?
The application must be submitted jointly by the candidate, a Ghent University supervisor, and a supervisor at the partner university in the South.
Is co-funding required?
Yes. Co-funding from the partner university in the South is mandatory.
Are exceptions to the mobility scheme possible?
Yes. Exceptions may be granted if:
The candidate must complete a required PhD study program in the South first
Fieldwork in the South must be conducted before coming to Ghent
The candidate already completed up to 12 months of funded PhD work in the South or at Ghent
