The University of Birmingham is a public research university in the United Kingdom. It received its royal charter in 1900 as the successor to Queen’s College. This made it the first English redbrick university to receive its own royal charter and the first English unitary university. The university helped establish both the Russell Group of British research universities and the international network of research universities. The 2026 QS World University Rankings place the University of Birmingham at #76.
