The Large Area 2D Semiconductor Platforms Scholarship is a fully funded PhD research opportunity offered by the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom. The project focuses on developing next-generation semiconductor technologies based on two-dimensional (2D) materials. In particular, the research aims to overcome the physical limitations of silicon-based electronics and to enable ultra-miniaturized device architectures for future electronic, photonic, and energy applications.

Background and Purpose

The project addresses key challenges in the semiconductor industry as Moore’s Law approaches its physical scaling limits. Therefore, it explores two-dimensional semiconductors as a viable alternative, as they can be scaled to atomic thickness while maintaining strong electronic performance. Moreover, these materials support emerging computing paradigms, such as in-memory computing and neuromorphic systems designed for artificial intelligence hardware.

Researchers will focus on the design, fabrication, and characterization of advanced 2D materials and devices. In addition, they will use state-of-the-art facilities to investigate material properties and device performance. As a result, the project aims to create scalable semiconductor platforms to support future generations of electronic and photonic systems.

Large Area 2D Semiconductor Platforms Scholarship Benefits

The scholarship is fully funded for both UK and international students. In addition, students gain access to one of the most advanced university cleanroom facilities in the United Kingdom. They also receive hands-on training with custom large-area 2D fabrication equipment. Furthermore, the project provides opportunities to work across integrated electronics, photonics, semiconductor device engineering, and material innovation. The program also includes supervision from Dr Ioannis Zeimpekis, an Associate Professor at the University of Southampton, along with strong academic mentoring and research support.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should hold a strong academic background in physics, materials science, electronics, nanotechnology, or related engineering disciplines. Moreover, candidates should demonstrate interest in semiconductor physics, device fabrication, and emerging computing technologies. Experience in laboratory work, nanofabrication, or electronic device modeling will further strengthen an application.

Large Area 2D Semiconductor Platforms Scholarship Application Process

Applicants must apply through the University of Southampton’s postgraduate research application portal. They are required to submit academic transcripts, a CV, and relevant supporting documents. Additionally, shortlisted candidates may be invited for interviews to assess their technical knowledge, research experience, and motivation for the project.

Opportunities for Scholars

This PhD offers strong opportunities in next-generation semiconductor research and advanced device engineering. Students will develop expertise in 2D materials, nanoelectronics, photonics, and scalable fabrication techniques. In addition, they will receive professional development training in project management, scientific communication, and technical reporting. Consequently, graduates will be well prepared for careers in academia, semiconductor industries, and advanced technology research institutions.
