The Research Training Program International (RTPI) Scholarship is a fully funded Higher Degree Research (HDR) scholarship offered by the University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney), Australia, and funded by the Australian Government. The scholarship attracts outstanding international students who want to pursue research-based postgraduate degrees at UNSW. It provides comprehensive financial support that allows recipients to focus on advanced research while contributing to the University’s internationally recognized research community. Moreover, the scholarship strengthens Australia’s research capacity by supporting talented researchers from around the world across a wide range of academic disciplines.
Background and Purpose
The RTPI Scholarship supports students enrolled in a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Research Master’s, or Master of Philosophy (MPhil) program in any UNSW faculty. The program aims to recognize academic excellence and encourage high-quality research with national and global impact. Furthermore, the selection process is highly competitive and evaluates academic performance, previous research achievements, publications, research experience, and the overall strength of each application. Applicants do not need to submit a separate scholarship application because UNSW automatically considers eligible candidates when they apply for admission to an approved Higher Degree Research program and request scholarship consideration. As a result, the process allows outstanding applicants to compete for funding while applying for their preferred research degree.
Research Training Program International Scholarship Benefits
The scholarship provides a living allowance of AUD 39,200 per annum based on the 2026 indexed rate. In addition, it covers full tuition fees and includes Single Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for eligible international students. PhD candidates receive funding for up to 3.5 years, while Research Master’s and Master of Philosophy students receive support for up to two years. Furthermore, eligible recipients may receive approved extensions in accordance with university and Australian Government policies. Consequently, scholars can dedicate their time to research without the financial burden of tuition and living expenses.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must be international students who satisfy the admission requirements for a Higher Degree Research program at UNSW. They must also demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, strong research potential, and, where applicable, research publications or relevant research experience. Furthermore, applicants must apply for admission to an eligible PhD, Research Master’s, or Master of Philosophy program and indicate that they wish to be considered for scholarship funding.
Research Training Program International Scholarship Application Process
Applicants should submit an application for admission to an eligible Higher Degree Research program at UNSW and select the option requesting scholarship consideration. They must provide all required academic documents, research proposals, and supporting materials as part of the admission process. Furthermore, UNSW automatically assesses eligible applicants for the RTPI Scholarship during the admission and scholarship selection process. Therefore, candidates should prepare a strong application that clearly demonstrates their academic excellence and research capability.
Opportunities for Scholars
The scholarship allows researchers to join one of Australia’s leading research universities while working with internationally recognized supervisors and multidisciplinary research teams. Moreover, scholars gain access to advanced research facilities, professional development programs, interdisciplinary collaborations, and global research networks. Their research contributes to scientific, technological, social, and policy advancements across diverse disciplines. Consequently, graduates develop the expertise and international experience needed for successful careers in academia, research institutes, government organizations, and industry worldwide.
