The ban on serving snacks and meals, particularly on domestic flights, is a precautionary measure to prevent the further increase of coronavirus cases. The decision was made on Saturday after a dramatic rise of COVID cases across the country.

PCCA To Ban Snacks and Meals

The decision to ban serving meals on flights is per the directives of the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC). It is an effort to stop the new coronavirus variant from spreading. “Amid rising Omicron cases across the country, the NCOC bans serving meals/snacks onboard domestic flights and public transport effective from January 17.” said the Authority on Twitter.

With the rapid increase in COVID cases, the NCOC held meetings with the various stakeholders. They discussed the disease prevalence in the urban areas and came up with directions to prevent the disease from spreading. Among the other instructions and protocols, it directed the PCAA to ban serving meals on domestic flights starting from January 17th. In addition to that, NCOC also compelled PCCA to make wearing masks mandatory at airports and during flights across the country.

The decision to ban serving snacks and meals on domestic flights is a preventive measure. The ban is to discourage passengers from taking off their masks while eating thereby, minimizing the contact between passengers and cabin crew. However, the passengers will be provided with disposable water bottles. Also, the inflight ban of meals is not extended to international flights as per the long duration of the flights.

Fifth COVID Wave in Pakistan

Like its predecessors, the latest “Omicron” variant is spreading havoc in the lives of people. Pakistan, like the rest of the world, is battling against the sudden rise in COVID cases. According to the epidemic curve chart data, this is the fifth wave of COVID in Pakistan. The country had a total of 4,286 COVID cases reported on Saturday. This is the highest single-day record of coronavirus cases since August 2021. As a means to get the situation under control, the NCOC banned serving snacks and meals not only on flights but on all other public transports.

The surge in coronavirus cases compels Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) to ban serving snacks and meals on flights.
