To find a McDonald\u2019s outlet in almost every part of the world is not surprising at all. The closing down of all three of the Mc Donald\u2019s outlets in Iceland was, by all means, devastating. The treasures of Iceland include the singer Bjork, the Blue Lagoon, and the yogurt Skyr, and standing out among these treasures is the last McDonald\u2019s Big Mac Meal that has been preserved perfectly for over a decade now. This McDonald\u2019s meal has been kept since the year 2009. The meal was bought by a local on October 30th<\/sup>, 2009, one day before the closing down of McDonald\u2019s outlets in Iceland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iceland is no longer one of the 118 areas worldwide where McDonald\u2019s operates. The first McDonald\u2019s started operating in Iceland in the year 1993. This venture was seen as a sign of Iceland\u2019s move towards globalization and modernization. But only a few years after that, in the year 2008, Iceland faced many economic challenges. Owing to these challenges, McDonald\u2019s had to leave Iceland in the year 2009. The locals were obviously disheartened because of the closure of the outlets one of the largest food chains in the world. An unusual number of people visited McDonald\u2019s in Iceland during the last week before its closure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are you wondering how actually the last Big Mac meal got preserved? Here\u2019s the story. After buying a Big Mac Meal one day before the closure of the restaurant, Hj\u00f6rtur Sm\u00e1rason threw it away. It was not before 2012 when Sm\u00e1rason was cleaning his garage and found the food that he bought three years ago. To his shock, the burger and fries were still in perfect condition. He said that the food seemed untouched despite the fact that everything around it had been eaten by mice. This is what Sm\u00e1rason had to further say about it, “This was now like a historical artifact that belonged to Iceland. The last McDonald’s burger in Iceland. And what do you do with a historical artifact? You put it in a museum\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The preserved Big Mac meal was therefore housed in the National Museum of Iceland for a year after that. Later, it was moved to Bus Hostel Reykjavik and a live stream displayed it 24\/7 for everybody to see it. After that, the burger and fries were transferred to Snotra House, and you can still see it there.
