In order to protest Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, McDonald\u2019s has decided to temporarily close down business in the 850 Russian restaurants. Along with McDonald\u2019s, Starbucks, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and Yum have made similar decisions about their businesses in Russia. These US-based companies might have made the decision because of the increasing social media pressure that was building up over the past few days. The demand of the public was to cut ties with Russia. Consequently, McDonald\u2019s made an announcement on Tuesday. According to their statement, the fast-food chain will temporarily close down its 850 restaurants and pause business in Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
McDonald\u2019s further announced that it will continue to pay wages to the 62,000 Russian employees. Hence, they are not to be affected by the closure. This is what the CEO Chris Kempczinski has to say about the situation; “The conflict in Ukraine and the humanitarian crisis in Europe has caused unspeakable suffering to innocent people\u201d. He further says, \u201cWe join the world in condemning aggression and violence and praying for peace\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This decision by McDonald\u2019s is a notable step by a company that has usually shied away from polarizing topics in the past. Seldom has McDonald\u2019s inserted itself into situations like these. This signifies a change in the global culture as businesses and corporations are no longer impartial on global issues. Rather, the corporations are now reactive and are openly expressing their stance. Shortly after McDonald\u2019s made this announcement Starbucks, PepsiCo, and Coca-Cola also announced that they would pause operations in Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A restaurant analyst Aaron Allen says in a statement that McDonald\u2019s decision to show solidarity with Ukraine is the boldest move made by a fast-food chain of this magnitude. \u201cThis will absolutely be a watershed moment and will reflect a precedent, not just for war but for other causes or means of showing solidarity,\u201d he says. Allen further expressed \u201cYou\u2019re pretty much closing off your revenue to make a statement.
