‘Shehnai’ Episode 1 Kicks Off to a Feisty Start [Review]

Affan Waheed and Ramsha Khan’s new drama, Shehnai is a breath of fresh air. While we mostly see crying daughters, widowed mothers, and helpless housewives on TV in the name of entertainment, Shehnai offers something different.

The Pakistani drama industry thrives on emotions and directors find it absolutely essential to make the audiences cry their eyes out. Perhaps that is why we rarely get to see a happy-go-lucky drama. A play is not deemed fit for audiences unless the heroine drops a stream of tears.

However, with Affan Waheed and Ramsha Khan’s new serial, Shehnai, the case has been reversed. The sobbing faces are replaced by a rather chirpy and loud family. The helpless heroine is now being shown as a woman with a mind of her own.

There are many reasons why ARY Digital’s new drama deserves to be on your watch list.

A world full of colors

Shehnai is a world filled with colors and diverse characters. From Dadi played by Samina Ahmed to the annoying photo aka Salma Hassan, the characters instantly bring a smile to your face. They all seem to be in their element and appear extremely relatable. After watching the first episode, you will forget about your worries for some time and just submerge in this new world.

The not so typical heroine

Ramsha Khan who plays the lead is once again seen in a feisty character. She got a lot of recognition for her previous drama Ghisi Pitti Mohabbat in which she played the role of a woman who married four times.

However, in this drama, she is succumbing to her parent’s wishes in the first episode. But something in her character indicates that she is not the typical victim heroine in this drama. We’d love to see how her character is chalked out.

Amazing ensemble cast

This drama brings in a lot of different actors together. There is Behroze Sabzwari, Javed Sheikh, ZQ, Arsalan Faisal and Maham Amir. The promising cast of the show compels you to get invested in every character. We love the fact that they are not mere fillers but seem to add to the beauty of the drama.

The power of a good director

Directors are known to be the captain of the ship. They can make or break a script. Hence when we saw Ahmed Bhatti’s name as the director of the show, we immediately felt a lot more confident about the drama. He has made many interesting serials including Titli, Mein Bushra and Ghisi Pitti Mohabbat.

Craving for a rom-com

Pakistani dramas are filled with so much heartbreak and deceit that it makes everything a very heavy watch. In such a situation, we’ve all been craving for a simple rom-com and Shehnai offers exactly that. There is no complex storytelling, no kaala jaadu, just a mad family and their shenanigans.

We aren’t saying that Shehnai is the best drama on air right now or that it has some sort of extraordinary storyline. However, sometimes we all do need simple, basic scripts that bring a smile to our face and Shehnai will surely do that!
