There’s no doubt that the first episode of Game of Thrones’ last season was a record smasher. It was viewed by 17.4 million fans and that were just those who watched it the legal way. As for how many people illegally downloaded, streamed and pirated it off the internet, that number is something else.<\/p>\n
Analytics first MUSO revealed that the first episode was watched 55 million times via illegal methods, and that too during its first 24 hours!<\/p>\n
And it gets more interesting from here.<\/p>\n
Of the 55 million times that the show was illegally streamed and downloaded off the internet, MUSO says that the most prefered way to watch it was via unofficial streams. These streams accounted for 76.6% of 55 million.<\/p>\n
Interestingly, web downloads for the first episode accounted for 12.2% of the views. Public torrents accounted for 10.8%, while private ones 0.5%.<\/p>\n
This is in stark contrast to the people who viewed the episode legally. HBO says 17.4 million watched the show across its three platforms – the premium cable channel, HBO Go and HBO Now apps. Out of these, 11.8 million saw it on their TV channel while 5.6 million views came from the official streams.<\/p>\n
And that’s not all. Even now people are watching the first episode, with piracy and official channels being used.<\/p>\n

China came in second, with 5 million pirated views. In China, a censored version of the GoT series airs via official channels. Both of these countries can be forgiven due to the fact that Game of Thrones is difficult to access there via official channels.<\/p>\n The third country on this list is surprising.
