Are Hollywood&#8217;s new and diversified cast members (such as Hasan Minhaj and Kumail Nanijani) accurately representing their communities? In this regard Pakistani actress Mansha Pasha has some thoughts, and she&#8217;s not afraid of airing them.<\/p>\n<p>Desi-American comedians like Kumail Nanjiani and Hasan Minhaj have made a lot of noise in Hollywood. The actress tweeted out that Kumail Nanjiani is an apologist for depicting desi women as \u2018<em>blubbering idiots<\/em>\u2019, particularly in his movie <strong>The Big Sick.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I like hasan minhaj so much more than kumail najiani. He co-produced the film with his wife Emily V. Gordon.<\/p>\n<p>The screenplay is based on his own life story. The plot follows how Kumail&#8217;s parents were trying to set him up in an arranged marriage. Meanwhile, his heart belonged to his white American girlfriend, who falls into a coma.<\/p>\n<h3>Writing For Representation<\/h3>\n<p>Before <em><strong>The Big Sick,<\/strong><\/em> Kumail Nanjiani was known for his role as a coder in <strong><em>Silicon Valley<\/em><\/strong>. Tired of being cast in stereotypical roles South Asian men usually find themselves in (the de-sexualized, professional type role, he called it), he ended up writing <strong><em>The Big Sick<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to Mansha Pasha, writers like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_ca\/article\/zmvmp3\/i-really-liked-the-big-sick-but-please-let-brown-women-live\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Amil Niazi<\/a> have called out series like Aziz Ansari&#8217;s <i>Master of None\u00a0<\/i>and films like Kumail Nanjiani&#8217;s <i>The Big Sick <\/i>for inaccurate representation of brown women.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I found myself growing increasingly frustrated and then infuriated with the cliched, stereotypical depictions of South Asian women that have unfortunately become the norm in the growing on-screen narratives of brown men.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; letter-spacing: 5px; font-size: 16px; margin: 0;\">ALSO READ<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a style=\"font-size: 20px; font-weight: 600; font-family: Raleway ,sans-serif;\" href=\"https:\/\/propakistani.pk\/lens\/hasan-minhaj-schools-ellen-degeneres-on-her-own-show-over-mispronounced-name-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hasan Minhaj Schools Ellen Degeneres On Her Own Show Over Mispronounced Name [Video]<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Truth is in most cases brown men dictate the representation of brown women on global platforms. These men didn&#8217;t do a good job with Bollywood and Pakistani cinema either.<\/p>\n<p>In her piece for The Aerogram (a South Asian culture site), <a href=\"http:\/\/theaerogram.com\/big-sick-brown-romance\/?utm_content=buffer02d20&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=facebook.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Tanzila Ahmed<\/a> pointed out that a lot of these series or films written by brown men end up putting white women on a pedestal, often at the expense of brown women.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0\u201cOnce again, Muslim Brown women were crafted as undesirable, conventional and unmarriageable for the Modern Muslim-ish Male.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Do you agree with Mansha Pasha&#8217;s views vis-a-vis Kumail Nanijani?
