1,845 feature films were submitted for the official selection this year. While Pakistan’s Wakhri<\/em><\/strong>, Rani <\/em><\/strong>and Blood Money<\/em><\/strong> made it, not a single Indian movie made the cut.<\/p>\n Irish short film Tiger Tiger<\/strong><\/em> co-produced by filmmaker Nabhan Karim of Wormhole Productions also made the cut.<\/p>\n Previously, two Pakistani short films have been selected for Cannes. This includes Masters of the Sky<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>in 2014, and\u00a0What a Waste!<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>in 2016. Last year alone they churned out more than 1,800 films. That’s more movies than any other country has ever produced in a year.<\/p>\n The number of films really improves the odds of a country making it to the line-up. Other countries emphasized quality over quantity and made it to the line-up.<\/p>\n While Bollywood mass produces commercial films, most of the content is not Cannes quality. Indian actress Huma Qureshi, affirmed this while talking to AFP.<\/p>\n \u201cThe kind of films that come to Cannes are very niche in India, because it\u2019s not the quintessential Bollywood film.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Qureshi explained that Bollywood is focused on big-budget hits. Independent and art-house films don’t have the traction at home that they have at festivals like Cannes, Venice, Berlin, etc.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re so obsessed with box office numbers that it will be a long time before that will really change.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n 32-years-old Huma Qureshi made her Cannes debut in 2012 with her debut film The Gangs of Wasseypur<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n Born to a Muslim family in New Delhi, the actress is known to take on moving roles. She will soon make her Netflix debut with a dystopian film about a mother looking for her lost child.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t think we have the budgets or the willingness for people to actually invest in these kinds of films.
