While statements like ‘Khana Khud Garam Krlo<\/em>‘ are brushed aside as a joke, it’s a cruel reality that in Pakistan, violence against women is also perpetuated over such\u00a0 ‘menial things’. In a similar case in Kasur, a man killed his sisters for not serving him lunch.<\/p>\n

In the Sheikhum village, a man shot dead two of his sisters for not serving him a meal. The double homicide took place within the limits of Sara-i-Mughal police station. The victims and the suspect’s father lodged an FIR of the incident.<\/p>\n

After the shooting, the suspect fled the scene. Police claimed to have arrested the suspect and lodged a double murder case against him.<\/p>\n

According to the complainant Rafiq Masih, his son Ashar Masih engaged in a verbal spat with his sisters Maryam Bibi and Astar Bibi for not serving him with lunch. Later, Ashar allegedly opened fire at Maryam and Astar.<\/p>\n

Maryam died on the spot from the bullet wounds, while Astar was rushed to Pattoki THQ Hospital. She too died from her injuries a few hours later.<\/p>\n

The crime is being further investigated.<\/p>\n

Not the First Case of Violence Against Women<\/h3>\n

When women’s rights activists raise slogans like ‘khana khud garam krlo<\/em>‘ and ‘chai khud bana lo<\/em>‘, they are ridiculed. Its a sad state of affairs that violence against women over such ‘menial things’ is indeed a reality.<\/p>\n

People conveniently overlook how access to economic opportunities and legal facilities that women in urban areas have, don’t extend countrywide.<\/p>\n

Women in rural areas with less awareness of legal channels also have limited access to such options.<\/p>\n

A few months prior a man Dameera cut off his wife Parveen\u2019s nose for not making him tea. The incident took place in the village of Saddar in Mian Chunnu village, 97\/15 L. Dameera was aided by his brother Ameera and cousin Mushtaq.<\/p>\n

Parveen is a domestic worker and the breadwinner for the family, but her husband couldn\u2019t make his own tea. There is no follow-up on the conviction of Dameera. The man was known to often assault and beat his wife.<\/p>\n

Yet the violence was allowed to escalate to this level despite police getting involved.<\/p>\n
