<\/p>\nRap music is often times controversial, since its a form of expression about something that ends up sparking a debate. Recently, a rap music video came out from the most unlikeliest of places, Makkah. And controversy soon followed.<\/p>\n
In recent years, Saudi Arabia has taken several steps to empower women, including lifting a decades-old ban on female driving, as part of dramatic social changes in the country. However, no one was ready to see a hijab-wearing woman from Makkah releasing a rap video focusing on the women living in the holy city.<\/p>\n

According to foreign media sources, the video has been deemed offensive.<\/p>\n Titled \u201cBint Makkah\u201d or \u201cA Girl from Makkah\u201d, the video features a hijab-donning female singer inside a coffee shop as she extols the characteristics of the women in the city. They further contend that it offends the holy city of Makkah, which is home to the most sacred Islamic site. Here is a small portion of the lyrics:<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m a well-bred girl from Makkah that deserves hard work. In tough times, she doesn\u2019t back down. She props up the back.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Prince Khalid Al Faisal has ordered those involved in production of the video to be prosecuted. He says,<\/p>\n \u201cThe video offends customs and traditions of the people of Makkah and contradicts their noble identity and traditions.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Some reports suggest that the singer is not even from Saudi Arabia, but is a resident.
