While we are all dealing with the epidemic that is the coronavirus (COVID-19), the smart people at NASA have a problem of their own at the moment. Their InSight lander is currently on the surface of Mars and has run into some unexpected issue during its mission to explore and study the planet.<\/p>\n

The InSight has a digging probe that was designed to burrow beneath the surface of Mars, like a jackhammer. However, the drill got stuck during the procedure because Mars\u2019 soil is a bit clumpier than scientists would have expected.<\/p>\n

After several failed attempts to get it out, the team at NASA had to get a bit creative. In the end, the probe got freed by giving it a solid smack with InSight\u2019s own shovel.<\/p>\n

NASA expected the probe, also called the \u2018the mole\u2019, to dig its way through the sand-like terrain, however, because the Martian soil clumped together, the whole apparatus got stuck in the ground.<\/p>\n

A bit of good news from #Mars<\/a>: our new approach of using the robotic arm to push the mole appears to be working! The teams @NASAJPL<\/a>\/@DLR_en<\/a> are excited to see the images and plan to continue this approach over the next few weeks. \ud83d\udcaa #SaveTheMole<\/a> <\/p>\n
