Like many other Pakistani legends, Google is honoring Urdu poet Saadat Hasan <\/span>Manto with a doodle. The Google doodle is a tribute to the poet and author on his birthday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The search engine paid tribute to the progressive writer on his 108th birthday.<\/p>\n

This Google doodle was illustrated by Pakistani artist Shehzil Malik<\/a>. Shehzil was also behind Generation’s cheeky ‘Gen X<\/em>‘ line, and also brought feminist art to the mainstream in Pakistan.<\/p>\n

With this illustration, she hoped people would look up Manto and get swept away by his works.<\/p>\n

Manto was a controversial writer of his time, especially given his penchant for being blunt in his work. His works were full of social commentary, and he was not afraid about highlighting the ills in society.\u00a0 The writer was reprimanded for being ‘profane’.<\/p>\n

Pakistani Twitter thanked Google for the effort and shared the Google doodle as #Manto<\/a> swarmed the micro-blogging site.<\/p>\n

Manto has been widely dubbed as one of South Asia\u2019s most accomplished modernist fiction writers. He published his set of short stories titled\u00a0 ‘Inqilab Pasand<\/strong>‘ or ‘Revolutionary’<\/em>, when he was only in his 20s, in 1935. By the 1940s, he was a revered name in Urdu literature.<\/p>\n

The writer also published a novel, three collections of essays, over 100 radio plays, and over 15 film scripts. Today he’s considered as one of the best Urdu poets that ever lived. He has several biopic books and two movies devoted to his life.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
